Thursday's horse racing NAP: Your best bet for today's racing from Callum Jamieson

Not as thin as Bully's beard though, and we go again on Thursday with a good thing on the all weather.

LUCYMAI (Chelmsford, 7.30) is back in handicap company for the in form Dean Ivory.

She loves Chelmsford like The Bull loves a Tesco meal deal, and the small field is tailor made for her.

All her wins have come on the all weather, five of them at the Essex track and after an unsuccessful stint in Listed company and on the grass it's no surprise Ivory has his mare back here.

She took a similar heat off the same mark over course and distance in August and all the signs point to another big run.

Jack Duern takes off a valuable three pounds and the draw in two suits her positive running style.

In terms of her rivals, Salateen and Crossing The Line are the obvious threats.

I've ruled out the latter – famous last words – on Andrew Balding's sticky spell. While Salateen can blow hot and cold and doesn't win half as often as he should.

Up the Lucymai.

Elsewhere on Thursday…

My only other fancy on Thursday is SNAPDRAGON FIRE (Wincanton, 2.05), a horse on the up for trainer Tom Lacey. He'll be hoping the rain stays away, and if it does it looks as if the handicapper could be playing catch up a little longer.

The right handed track is a big plus and the booking of Richard Johnson clearly takes the eye.

‘Oz’ Creator Tom Fontana to Be Honored by Writers Guild of America East

Tom Fontana, creator of “Oz” and “Homicide: Life on the Street,” will be honored with the Writers Guild of America East’s Ian McLellan Hunter Award for Career Achievement.

Fontana will be presented with the honor at the 71st annual Writers Guild Awards, which will be held at New York’s Edison Ballroom on Feb. 17.

The award is presented to a WGA East member in honor of their body of work as a writer in motion pictures or television. Past recipients include Geoffrey Ward, Andrew Bergman, John Sayles, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, John Waters, Richard LaGravenese, John Patrick Shanley, and Nora Ephron.

“I’m extremely grateful to the men and women in our guild for thinking me worthy of the award,” Fontana said. “Now, everything I write will have to be better than before.”

Fontana joined the WGA East in 1982 as a writer on the series “St. Elsewhere,” for which he received three Emmy Awards, two Writers Guild Awards, and the Humanitas Prize. He has written and produced “Oz,” “Homicide: Life on the Street,” “The Philanthropist,” “Copper,” and “Borgia.” He is currently the showrunner of “City on a Hill,” which will premiere on Showtime in 2019.

In 2013, WGA members selected “Oz,” “Homicide: Life on the Street,” and “St. Elsewhere” as three of the 101 best-written TV series. He has also received two of the WGA East’s honorary awards: the Richard B. Jablow Award for devoted service to the guild and the Evelyn F. Burkey Award, which recognizes those who have brought “honor and dignity” to writers.

Fontana co-founded the non-profit charity Stockings with Care, and is on the boards of the Writers Guild Initiative, the NYPD Police Museum, the Creative Coalition, the Acting Company, the Williamstown Theatre Festival, and the International Council of the Paley Media Center.

Former MTV Host Matt Pinfield Lucky to be Alive After Getting Hit by Car

Former MTV host Matt Pinfield is recovering in a hospital after getting hit by a car that resulted in major injuries … TMZ has learned.

A rep for Pinfield tells TMZ … the MTV legend was hit by a speeding car Monday night in L.A. Matt was taken to the hospital where he was treated for a leg broken in two places and lacerations to his head that required stitches. He underwent surgery and is now in stable condition.

We’re told Matt’s awake and in great spirits. He’ll soon begin physical therapy. As for the driver that hit him … we’re told it was NOT a hit-and-run situation.

For those who didn’t grow up in the ’90s … Matt was practically the face of MTV in its heyday. He hosted a bunch of shows and dropped serious music knowledge on ‘TRL.’ That knowledge ultimately led to his own TV show and becoming a vice president of A&R and Artist Development for Columbia Records.

He was a DJ for a decade at WHTG before moving over to MTV.

What to Cook Right Now

Good morning. We devoted this week’s Food section of The Times to the joys of holiday baking, with articles devoted to slice-and-bake cookies from Alison Roman, a roundup of the year’s best baking books, an examination of the strange and beautiful world of competitive cookie decorating and a look at the culture of holiday food swaps across the land.

I hope they’ll lead you to the kitchen this weekend. Maybe you’ll make Alison’s boss new recipe for chocolate-molasses cookies (above). Those are some adult cookies, kid. They’re rich and smoky: Lauren Bacall saying, “You remember things, don’t you” in “Dark Passage.” If you’re looking for sweetness and light, you won’t find them. Try Alison’s coconut shortbread cookies or her salted pistachio shortbread wedges instead.

For dinner tonight, will you try to cook without a recipe? It’s a good exercise, gets the mind working nicely and helps in the matter of kitchen confidence as well. Try a free-form pasta puttanesca: olive oil, garlic, anchovies, canned crushed tomatoes, pitted black olives, capers and red-pepper flakes, to serve over linguine or spaghetti or bucatini or whatever dried pasta you happen to have in the house. I like it with shells sometimes, for how the olives get lost in them.

It’s simple work: Sauté the anchovies and a lot of garlic in a lot of olive oil while your salted pasta water comes to a boil in a big pot. (How many anchovies? How many you got? I go minimum four, and same with cloves of garlic.) When the fish are melted and the garlic’s gone gold, add the tomatoes and stir everything together. Let that simmer a while, get a little thicker, then add the olives and capers and red-pepper flakes until it’s as fiery as you like. Taste for salt and pepper. Keep simmering and, when the pasta is done to your liking, taste again, then toss it with sauce and serve.

Want an actual recipe? How about pan-roasted chicken in cream sauce? I learned to make it in the tiny kitchen of the Beatrice Inn in Manhattan, cooking with the chef Angie Mar, and even when I made it with dried mushrooms instead of fresh, it was among the most delicious feeds I had this year.

Or a Provencal-style greens soup? Some oven-steamed salmon? I love this slow cooker coconut curry soup with sweet potato and kale. You may want just to cook a simple sheet pan dinner.

There are thousands more recipes waiting for you on NYT Cooking. (Nota bene: You need a subscription to use the site in its entirety. Please consider taking one out if you haven’t already. I want so badly to keep doing this work and it’s subscriptions that allow me to. We even offer gift subscriptions!)

More culinary inspiration may be found, free of charge, on our Instagram, Facebook and Twitter pages. (And you can follow me on Twitter and Instagram as well, if you like.) Also in Emily Weinstein’s terrific new newsletter “Five Weeknight Dishes.”

If anything goes sideways, either with a recipe or the technology, please ask for help. We monitor the mailbox at [email protected] the way this dog watches his teddy bear in the wash.

Now, it’s nothing to do with crème fraîche or Dover sole, but Kelefa Sanneh writing about boxing is a reminder of the long and storied history of New Yorker stylists engaging with the sweet science. Here he is on Saturday night’s Wilder-Fury fight in Los Angeles. (And here’s A.J. Liebling in the same magazine back in 1955, writing about Archie Moore and Rocky Marciano at Yankee Stadium.)

You might enjoy this comic-art history of the Caesar salad, by Jef Harmatz on Medium.

I’m, like, a judge on the America episode of this new cooking show on Netflix, “The Final Table”? I had fun with Dax Shepard and Colin Hanks, and we busted Andrew Knowlton’s chops and we ate a lot of turkey. See what you think.

Finally, Alec Baldwin interviewing Roger Daltrey for the Here’s the Thing podcast sent me down a rabbit hole: Here’s The Who, “My Generation,” live in 1967. See you on Friday.

Northumberland OPP warn of black bear cub sighting in Warkworth

Northumberland OPP are warning the public to take precautions following a black bear cub sighting in the village of Warkworth on Tuesday night.

Officers responded to a report of the bear sighting on Old Hastings Road around 7:30 p.m., however, the bear was not located. Warkworth is about 52 kilometres southeast of Peterborough.

Some residents have posted photos on social media indicating two small bears have been seen in the area over the past few days.

OPP are reminding the public that bears should be treated with caution and respect.

“Female bears with cubs may become aggressive if they feel their cubs are being threatened,” OPP stated.

Police say bears often come into urban areas in search of food and removing potential attractants will “help avoid unwarranted visitors.”

“Generally, bears want to avoid humans. Most encounters are not aggressive and attacks are rare,” police said.

OPP offer the following safety tips to prevent bears from wandering onto property:

  • Put garbage out to the curb-side only on the morning of collection
  • Put away bird feeders
  • Store garbage in waste containers with tight-fitting lids
  • Clean outdoor grills after each use, including the grease trap underneath.

If you encounter a bear, OPP advise:

  • Remain calm and avoid sudden movements.
  • Give the bear plenty of room, allowing it to continue its activities undisturbed. If it changes its behaviour, you’re too close, so back away.
  • If you see a bear but the bear does not see you, detour quickly and quietly.
  • If a bear does spot you, it is best to talk in a normal voice and wave your arms while it is still further away.
  • Never feed or throw food to a bear.
  • If a bear pursues you, throw something on the ground, it may be distracted by this and allow you time to escape.
  • If you are near a building or vehicle, get inside as a precaution.
  • Remember that a standing bear is not always a sign of aggression. Many times bears will stand to get a better view.

If you encounter a bear and your personal safety is threatened, you are urged to call the OPP immediately by dialling 911. For non-emergency encounters, call the toll-free Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327 (TTY 705-945-7641) for advice on dealing with bears in the community.

Al Roker’s daughter has grown up to be gorgeous

There’s little doubt that America’s favorite meteorologist is Al Roker, who, over the course of his distinguished career has become a major face on morning television. Known for his big smile, trademark glasses, and sunny disposition, Roker has made quite the name for himself, penning several books, starring on Broadway, and breaking world records, to name a few. And his wife, Deborah Roberts, is no slouch either, as she’s an award-winning journalist and an author in her own right. What a power couple!

With parents like that, there’s no question that Roker and Roberts’ children are destined for great things. We’re especially interested in what Leila Roker is up to, given that she’s stepping out of her parents’ shadows and into a limelight all her own. So what’s the daughter of America’s weatherman interested in? Does she plan to light up the green screen just like her dad does? Here’s what we know about Leila Roker, who’s grown up to be seriously gorgeous.

Both science and faith helped bring Leila into the world

For some couples, getting pregnant is easy. But for the many other couples who struggle with infertility, getting pregnant and carrying a baby to term can be extremely difficult. The latter was the case for Roker and Roberts, who’ve been open about their reproductive struggles. That’s why, after losing one pregnancy after the two month mark, they turned to in vitro fertilization the second time around. It worked, and Roberts got pregnant again. “This time I was afraid to be too happy,” Roker penned in Guideposts. “I prayed every day, asking God to keep my wife and our unborn child in his hands.”

Nine months later, Roker’s prayers were answered, when at 9:17 AM on Tuesday, November 17, 1998, Leila Ruth Roker was born. Of course, Roker was overcome with gratitude. “Science may have helped us on our path to pregnancy, but it couldn’t get us all the way to the end,” he continued. “The only thing that could do that was the power and grace of God.” What a blessing!

Two parents with two distinct styles

Roker and Roberts have been married a long time — since 1995, y’all — and parenting for even longer, as Roker also has a child from his first marriage. And during that time, they’ve come to accept how different their parenting styles are. “I’m a little bit more involved and hands-on, I think, and Al is a lot more standoffish when it comes to meddling in their lives,” Roberts shared in an interview with Today. Sounds like “go ask your mother” is said a lot in their house!

That divergence of styles was especially apparent when Leila had a big decision to make. “Leila wanted to change schools… from middle school to high school,” Roker recalled. “She had been going to a private school, she wanted to go to a public school here in New York City. Deborah was kind of against it, I was for it!” So who won that battle? Given that Leila went to LaGuardia High School, it sounds like pops claimed that victory… this time.

A city slicker through and through

In 2016, the world got an intimate look at Leila’s life (and her adorably chummy relationship with her dad) on the Today show, when the pair ventured out together to Sequoia National Park for their first-ever camping trip. And both of them admit that they were surprised when Leila agreed to go, given her personality. “I am a city kid, so like, camping? I’m not good at that,” she admitted. So you know this is gonna be good!

Leila really wasn’t lying about being out of her element in the woods, either. “There are animals and trees everywhere,” she observed. “And I really don’t like birds because I’m afraid one will poop on my head.” Wait, what? Someone must be accustomed to dodging NYC pigeons!

City mouse or country mouse, Leila couldn’t hide her wonder when she and her dad got to see American black bears up close and personal, just waking up from their winter hibernation. Plus, watching the duo try and set up a tent? Priceless.

She's a fashionista

New York City arguably offers some of the best people-watching opportunities in the world, given that it’s an international destination. So it’s not surprising that Roker has become something of a fashionista, able to slay looks with the best of them.

So what’s her fashion philosophy? “My style is fluid. Sometimes I like to be girly, and other times I like to be edgier,” she noted in Footwear News, which she shared in an Instagram post. That’s a solid approach, for sure! That also means she can really mix it up, depending on her mood. “Some weeks I’ll wear a lot of skirts; other weeks I’ll wear tomboyish styles,” she continued.

Roker has regularly shared her fashion advice, particularly when it comes to shoes, several times in Footwear News. She also cites her celeb fashion idols, including Rihanna, Kylie Jenner, and Khloe Kardashian. We can’t wait to see what she’ll wear next!

Clapping back against the haters

As is all too real in the age of social media, becoming famous can make you the target of haters — especially if you’re a woman. That’s something Roker unfortunately has had to deal with, although she’s not afraid to confront people and shut them down when need be.

In fact, that’s exactly what she did in an Instagram post she made in 2017. “I can wear what I want and do what I want,” she wrote, clapping back against the bullies who called her names. She also pointed out that she looks a lot better and has done a lot more in life than her trolls, which is painfully obvious to anyone looking.

Still, Roker understands what kind of impact these hateful actions can have. “Thank you for continuing to be the barriers that set women back in being imprisoned by their looks,” she quipped sarcastically. Pay no mind to the peanut gallery, boo!

Sworn to the sisterhood

Roker is a feminist and isn’t afraid to let the world know it, which isn’t a surprise given how outspoken her mother has been about women’s issues. For one, the young Roker posts empowering images on her Instagram page that promote both body positivity and the importance of strong women. We are definitely here for that!

Roker also goes deep on the issues, too, and has given her take on controversies on more than one occasion. For example, remember when the all-female Ghostbusters movie had a bunch of dudes feeling extra salty? Well, she had something to say about it. “Maybe guys would like Ghostbusters better if it was an all model production with Cara Delevingne, Kendall Jenner, Taylor Swift, and Adriana Lima,” she wondered in an Instagram post. “Instead of the equipped, renowned comedians already cast?” We’re picking up what you’re putting down, Leila!

Roker has also publicly lauded reporter Ronan Farrow, whose coverage of the #MeToo moment helped uncover the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

This is where she goes to college

One of the most important decisions in a young adult’s life is where to go to college, something Roker stressed about back in 2016. But of course, any worry she had was unfounded, as she was accepted to the University of Southern California’s class of 2021, according to a post on her Instagram page. Congrats, girl!

Additionally, because Roker clearly knows how to live, she decided to spend her first year studying abroad at the American University of Paris. Oh la la! And while that does sound pretty close to paradise, Roker has been open about some of the difficulties she’s faced in the process, which are more complex than your usual freshman problems. “By spending my freshman year studying in Europe, I faced an even bigger culture shock,” she wrote in Forbes magazine. “I was suddenly faced with what it was like to be a young black woman in a predominantly white European world.” That cannot be easy.

Fortunately, Roker looks like she’s having a wonderful time in Europe, enjoying all it has to offer.

A chip off of the old block

Roker’s dad may be America’s weatherman, but it doesn’t look like she’ll be following in the meteorologist’s footsteps. Rather, Roker appears to be shaping up to take after her mother when it comes to her fledgling career. That’s right: she’s a self-professed “budding journalist,” according to her LinkedIn page. Looks like mom had a real impact!

Rather than waiting until finishing college to get real world experience, Roker has been busy writing for several different outlets. For one, she’s contributed several articles to Peacock Plume, the student newspaper for the American University of Paris. She’s also been published in Footwear News and Forbes, and has interned for Paper magazine. That’s a pretty impressive resume for someone her age! Roker is also interested in social media and public relations, in addition to fashion. Chances are you’ll be seeing her bylines in high places in the future.

Crusading against campus sexual assault

During her first few weeks of college life, Roker saw that something was different — something big. “I began to realize that many of the people around me held antiquated views on how men and women should carry themselves, and specifically, what the standards were for acceptable male behavior,” she penned in in Forbes magazine. Coming from progressive NYC, that had to be an intense discovery.

This in turn led to another revelation. “I was suddenly faced with having to create my own definition of what is considered to be sexual harassment and assault,” she continued. But rather than be overwhelmed or rest on her laurels, Roker sprang into action. She reached out to It’s On Us, a non-profit organization (started from the Biden Foundation) with the mission of getting men to be active in stopping sexual assault. As a digital fellow, she’s worked with her university to prevent sexual assault on campus. That is a prime example of leadership!

She's a certified yoga teacher

Where do you find Roker when she’s not studying, working on an article, spending time with her family, being an activist, or slaying on her Insta? Well, chances are good that you’ll find her pumping iron at the gym, as she’s no stranger to working out. And in June of 2018, she diversified her exercise portfolio, as if she wasn’t already busy enough. “Just completed a yoga teaching program, and in a couple of weeks I’ll have yoga teacher certification,” she wrote in an Instagram post. No wonder she looks so fit and strong!

The certification process was transformative for her, too, bringing positive new energy into her life. “So thankful for the life changing people and their souls I’ve met on this journey,” she continued. Judging from the way those headstands are coming along, maybe we’ll see more yoga selfies in the future.

Heat’s Hassan Whiteside abruptly leaves bench, walks to locker room in fourth quarter

Miami Heat center Hassan Whiteside decided he had enough in his team's 105-90 home loss to the Orlando Magic on Tuesday night.

So the 7-footer opted to leave the game early.

After sitting the entire fourth quarter, Whiteside left the bench and headed straight for the locker room at American Airlines Arena by himself with 40.5 seconds left in the game.

The Magic made a three-pointer, the Heat turned over the ball and fouled on the fastbreak. Then, Whiteside left.

Whiteside has sat out the fourth quarter in five of the last six games.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra told reporters after the game that he hadn't received an explanation from Whiteside, but had an idea why he left.

"Probably extremely upset like we all are," said Spoelstra, whose team dropped to 9-14. The Heat have lost nine of their last 13 games heading into a six-game road trip.

Rihanna Flaunts Major Cleavage In See-Through Lingerie From Her New Collection On Instagram

Rihanna has a new Savage x Fenty collection out, and it is fire. For the past couple of weeks, the pop star has been promoting her latest line on her Instagram page by rocking them herself.

Wednesday wasn’t any different. The 30-year-old singer took to the popular social media platform to share a sultry photo of herself wearing an electric blue see-through lace bodysuit that leaves little to the imagination. Visible in the photo is Rihanna’s tattoo on her sternum alongside other of RiRi’s signature body art. The singer paired her sultry lingerie with a few necklaces and bracelets that highlights the dreamy atmosphere presented in the snap.

To add to the aesthetics of the photo, Rihanna is featured holding what appears to be a tutu hat over her head in the same blue shade of the lingerie. The singer and businesswoman is seated on a bed of flowers inside what appears to be a glass structure.

The new Savage x Fenty styles are set to arrive today, Dec. 5. As Highsnobiety noted, fans across the United States throughout the week can get their hands on existing collections and exclusive drops at pop-up stores in New York City, the Mall of America in Minnesota, San Jose and Las Vegas.

The snap, which she shared with the 66.2 million followers she has on Instagram, racked up more than 950,000 likes in under an hour of being posted at the time of this writing. As per usual, her fans flocked to the comment section to praise her for coming out with sexy lingerie that caters to a variety of women and bodies.

Earlier this year, Rihanna launched Savage x Fenty lingerie line, which has bee praised for being size inclusive with designs that include babydoll robes, lace catsuits and corsets, in sizes 1X to 3X, as Cosmopolitan noted.

“I’m loving this entire shoot,” one user wrote accompanied by two heart-eyed emoji, while another user added, “I am so in love with the prettiest woman alive.”

Rihanna has also been applauded for including women of different sizes and shapes in her advertising campaigns, including two pregnant women. As the Inquisitr previously reported, Rihanna has addressed the need for the fashion industry to embrace different sizes, giving her own relationship with her body and confidence as an example.

“I’m not built like a Victoria’s Secret girl, and I still feel very beautiful and confident in my lingerie,” she said in an interview, as quoted in the Inquisitr piece.
