Virginia Democrat once jailed for underage sex elected to state Senate

A Democratic lawmaker in Virginia who was jailed for six months in 2015 for having sex with his underage secretary was elected to the state legislature this week, reports said.

Joe Morrissey was elected to the Virginia state Senate on Tuesday, easily defeating Independent Waylin Ross in the district that covers parts of Richmond and the surrounding area, WJLA reported.

Morrissey spent six months in jail when, as a state legislator, he pleaded guilty to having sex with his 17-year-old secretary.

Morrissey, 62, and the woman, Myrna Pride, stayed together and have since married and had three children.

In 2016, Morrissey ran an unsuccessful campaign to be Richmond’s mayor and later had his law license revoked, according to the report.

His election was part of a Democratic wave in Virginia that secured the entire state government to the party.
