Starbucks customer outraged after barista spells his name ‘ISIS’ on his coffee cup instead of Aziz

A MAN wearing Islamic dress was outraged when a Starbucks barista spelt his name 'ISIS' on his coffee cup rather than 'Aziz'.

Niquel Johnson, 40, went to a Starbucks store in Philadelphia dressed in a thobe – an ankle-length, long sleeve garment.

He ordered three drinks, one for himself and for two pals he was with.

When he was asked by a barista for a name for his order Mr Johnson gave his Muslim name 'Aziz'.

He collected the drinks but did not notice until about 20 minutes later that his name had been written as 'ISIS' on the three cups.

Mr Johnson, who lives in Philadelphia, told NBC News: "I was shocked at first and then angry because I felt as though we were discriminated against.

"I feel as if I was discriminated against and it's hurtful."

However, after investigating, Starbucks insisted the incident was not discriminatory.

A spokesman said: "The customer approached and provided the name Aziz. The barista mistakenly spelled it incorrectly.

"We have connected with Mr Johnson and apologised for this regrettable mistake."

The incident took place in the same city where two black men were arrested by police in April 2018 after sitting in a store and not ordering anything – in a case that sparked global outrage.

Following that Starbucks ordered more than 8,000 stores to close for an afternoon so around 175,000 workers could undergo racial bias training.

Mr Johnson said the outcome of that case made him think the chain would treat his complaint, from August 25, more seriously.

He said: "I don't think the training was enough. I'm considering legal action because I don't think Starbucks is taking this seriously enough.

"Between myself and my family, we used to go to Starbucks daily. I'm not going back there to support them anymore."
