The couple met while walking their dogs in 2006 and married the following year in Georgetown, Colorado.

He said: ‘A light unexpectedly turned off in my life on Monday afternoon when my beautiful wife Mrs Mercer was taken from me in tragic circumstances.

‘We met in 2006 while dog-walking and married in 2007, in Georgetown, Colorado.

‘From that moment we have spent many happy hours together as a normal married couple and wider family.

‘When I met Karen, I knew she was my soulmate, so I am absolutely devastated. I can no longer tease her about her singing, or hold her hand.

‘The screams were that horrifying and then I looked left and saw the back end of the car going into Specsavers.

‘It went really quiet for seconds and then about 50 people rushed over to the incident.’
