NYPD readying detectives for backup during George Floyd protests

The NYPD is readying its detectives to be deployed on the street as the city braces of another night of tense George Floyd protests, police sources told The Post.

Detectives must be in uniform — hats and bats, in cop slang — until further notice and be ready to be deployed if needed in a rare order the Police Department sent out to detectives via email Saturday.

The directive comes after thousands of protesters flooded the streets of Manhattan and Brooklyn Friday to protest the death of George Floyd, a black man who died in Minneapolis after a cop knelt on his neck.

Cops Friday were filmed macing and beating protesters around the Barclays Center and other parts of Brooklyn, where two black state lawmakers said they were maced while peacefully protesting.

The Brooklyn protesters splintered off into violent fractions, torching a police van and damaging many other NYPD vehicles. One woman has been charged with attempted murder after being suspected of hurling a Molotov cocktail into an occupied police cruiser in the early hours of Saturday morning as protests died down.

Tense demonstrations broke out again in Manhattan and Brooklyn Saturday. Crowds shut down Manhattan highways, as cops maced and shoved protesters filling the local streets of Flatbush.

Attorney General Letitia James is investigating incidents of police violence Friday under the directive of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who described scenes posted to social media as “disturbing.”
