New York state beaches to open for Memorial Day weekend, Cuomo says

New York state beaches will open for Memorial Day weekend, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Friday.

Cuomo said New York worked with New Jersey, Connecticut and Delaware to come up with the multi-state regional reopening beach plan amid the coronavirus crisis.

“What one state does will affect other states,” Cuomo said during his daily Albany press briefing, explaining that people will “flood” to any neighboring state that reopens its beaches if one state does not reopen for the summer.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy announced Thursday that the state’s beaches will open for Memorial Day weekend and there was mounting pressure on Cuomo by state lawmakers to do the same.

“Our relationship and responsibility to our other states, neighboring states is important,” Cuomo said.

The governor added, “We want what’s best for New Yorkers. It’s not in New York’s best interest to have New Yorkers to go to a New Jersey beach.”

Under the plan, state and local beaches, as well as lakeshores, may open on the Friday before Memorial Day weekend with strict requirements. The beaches can reopen at no more than 50 percent capacity, no sports like volleyball or football will be allowed, areas for social gatherings like picnic areas and playground will be closed and social distancing measures must be adhered to, Cuomo said.
