Fury as trucker on mobile phone who left woman with broken spine walks free despite killing on the road 9 years ago

A TRUCKER who crashed into a car as he checked his phone’s map app was spared jail — despite previously killing a motorist by careless driving.

Cary Gordon, 58, left a woman with a fractured spine after hitting her broken-down Mercedes at more than 50mph.

Horrifying dashcam footage showed Gordon staring at Google Maps on his mobile seconds before impact on the A34 in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, in August last year.

However, he was given a 14-month suspended sentence at Oxford crown court.

Gordon, of Worthing, West Sussex, admitted dangerous driving and was disqualified for two years and must take an extended retest.

In 2011, Gordon was jailed over the death of Christopher Alderton, 30.

His recovery truck hit a Nissan Micra on the A24 in West Sussex.

He admitted death by careless driving but his six-month jail sentence was cut to 16 weeks on appeal, with no requirement for a retest.

Mr Alderton’s mother, Brenda, 81, of Great Waldingfield, Suffolk, said: “Professional drivers that kill innocent people should be banned from lorry driving for life.

"The law must be changed before any more lives are lost.”

Joshua Harris, of road safety charity Brake, said: “Shockingly lenient sentences like this disrespect road crash victims.”
