Izzie Balmer and Charlie Ross were journeying towards Surrey for the instalment of Antiques Road Trip. Izzie’s eye was caught by a small bronze dog figure which she believed would make her a profit. But later on the BBC show, she hid behind her hands as the auctioneer failed to drum up a high price for the item.
Exploring the antique shop, Izzie came across the animal figurine and instantly liked it.
“He’s rather lovely,” she said, picking up the item. Dachshunds, sausage dogs – they’re super popular at the moment, really on-trend.
“He looks like he’s cast.” The mini bronze pooch was labelled for £45, but Izzie managed to purchase it for £35.
She also bought a quirky hippo letter opener from the same place, along with war diaries and medals.
Explaining her choices, the 32-year-old said of the letter opener: “He’s just fun – I like animals, I like hippos, I love novelty items.
“The market loves novelty items and I can’t say I’ve seen a hippo before.
“He’s priced at £28, which isn’t bad at all.” In the end, Izzie paid £189 for the three items.
She was hoping to make more cashback from the items, but unfortunately, the dog would prove to be a loss of money.
Later at the auction with Charlie, it was time for the dog figure to be bought.
“A dog – it looks gorgeous,” Charlie said before Izzie remarked: “Don’t sound so surprised!”
The auctioneer started the bidding at £10 and managed to raise it to £22.
But nobody raised the price, and Izzie became more and more nervous.

“I need more!” She said as interest in the item seemed to have peaked.
Putting her hands over her face, she commented: “I can’t watch! I’m not watching.”
She told Charlie: “You’re going to have to tell me!” Eventually, it was sold for £28 – £7 less than what Izzie paid for it.
Disappointed, she added: “I really liked him” before turning to Charlie and adding: “But not quite as much as I like you.”
Izzie started the challenge with £301 and made a small loss which left her with £289.88.
Charlie began with £194.44 and made a profit having finished with £250.10.
Although close, this meant Izzie had “won” the challenge for the day.
