Celtic fans hold offensive banner in protest at Scottish government's 500-fan cap as they are locked out of St Johnstone

CELTIC fans unfurled an offensive banner aimed at the SNP – after being locked out of St Johnstone's McDiarmid Park.

The small, travelling Hoops support made their feelings known again after football fans were locked out grounds on Boxing Day.

Just 500 fans have been allowed into grounds up and down Scotland on Boxing Day after Nicola Sturgeon’s announcement last week.

That will continue for the next three weeks in the Championship and Leagues One and Two, while the Premiership shut down early for winter.

A small army of Celtic supporters made the trip to Perth to watch from a hill outside the ground as Celtic beat struggling St Johnstone 3-1.

And the fans made their feelings pretty clear with a banner, reading: “F*** the SNP.”

They unfurled a similar banner for Wednesday’s draw at St Mirren, which said: "Open your homes for COP26 but closed doors for fans. F*** off SNP.”

It comes after the midweek scenes in the Aberdeen end when they visited Easter Road in midweek.

A video widely shared on social media showed travelling Reds fans singing anti-Nicola Sturgeon songs and chanting "you can shove your f****** booster up your a***".

The supporter sharing the clip said it showed Sturgeon had lost the room and wrote: "Don’t be angry at football fans for feeling this way, instead question why that is.

"It’s because this government always throw us under the bus at the first opportunity.

"PS. No matter how angry you are, please #getboostednow."

Dons chief Dave Cormack has already estimated that the official rule change limiting attendances to outdoor events to 500 fans for the foreseeable future could cost them £500,000 in festive revenue.

Cormack sent a personal message to the first minister on Twitter asking her to bring in the restrictions after the today, when Aberdeen host Dundee.

They will also hope that fans may be able to return to grounds on a wider basis by the time their re-arranged home clash with Rangers is played on January 18.

He posted on Twitter: “@NicolaSturgeon On behalf of Scottish football fans, including those home for Xmas who plan ahead to attend games with their families, we at Aberdeen FC respectfully ask the FM to consider delaying the 500 fan limit on Boxing Day until midnight on 26th.

"Thank you in advance.”
