Who Is the New Captain America?

Avengers: Endgame revealed who the new Captain America would be, and the answer surprised some people.

We can find out who the new Captain America is by asking two additional questions: Who is The Falcon? And who is the actor who plays him, Anthony Mackie? And that leads to the third and toughest question: When will we see the captain again? That one is a little trickier.

Who is The Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

You may recall that at the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) returned from his trip to replace the Infinity Stones. He was now an elderly gentleman more than content to live out his well-deserved rest. So who could take his place?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe led us to believe the choice came down to Bucky/The Winter Soldier and Sam/The Falcon. Both had proved to be trusty allies when Steve was in a pinch. However, instead of choosing his longtime friend and fellow time refugee Bucky, Steve turned the shield over to his newer partner. Sam was surprised and humbled but promised to do his best.

Falcon, the first African-American hero in mainstream comics, first appeared in 1969 and was co-created by Marvel legend Stan Lee and artist Gene Colan as a response to the civil rights movement. Colan recalled: “I drew as many different types of people as I could into the scenes I illustrated, and I loved drawing black people. I always found their features interesting and so much of their strength, spirit and wisdom written on their faces. I approached Stan, as I remember, with the idea of introducing an African-American hero, and he took to it right away.”

The Falcon uses mechanical wings to fly and can telepathically control birds. In the comics, he became the new Captain America and leader of the Avengers in 2015. In the movies, he first appeared in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and then went on to fly in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Captain: America Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame.

Who is Anthony Mackie?

Mackie is a New Orleans native who graduated from Julliard with alumni Tracie Thoms and Lee Pace. His film career began in the early 2000s with an appearance in the Eminem film 8 Mile as the antagonist Papa Doc.

He followed that up with Brother to Brother, an independent film about a struggling black homosexual artist. Mackie received and Independent Spirit Award for his performance. He alternated film and stage work, with credits including Million Dollar Baby, The Hurt Locker, Notorious and The Hate U Give.

Mackie told multiple outlets he believed his character truly died with the Thanos snap at the end of Infinity War, so he was quite pleased to be resurrected. Just as Falcon got the shield from Cap, Evans broke the good news to Mackie in real life. Life imitated art.

“We cried. We drank. We laughed. I am very happy I got that moment with Chris, for him to not only pass me the shield, but to tell me it was happening,” Mackie said.

We don’t know for certain yet when Mackie will first appear as Captain America, as Marvel does not plan to announce their next phase of movies until after Spider-Man: Far From Home comes out in July. We do know there is a possibility that Evans may reprise his role in the Loki series planned for Disney+, the streaming service that launches in November.

The next time we see Mackie in the MCU, it’ll be as Falcon again. He’s scheduled to team up with Sebastian Stan for the series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The series takes place after Endgame. The website Den of Geek theorized: “Don’t be surprised if this series is about the pair coming to terms with a world where Steve Rogers has to play a very different role, and with Sam coming to terms with the enormity of his responsibility.”
