Tesco scraps cheap delivery with update to rules – but some are not happy with the changes

Tesco has been changing its delivery service rules during the coronavirus pandemic. It has now announced a flat rate price will be introduced for online orders. However, some customers are worried about the update.

During the coronavirus lockdown, many Britons started getting their groceries delivered.

Tesco shoppers can pick from different delivery slots which range in price.

Customers can pay anywhere between £2 and £7 for delivery with the cheaper fees being offered during the quietest times.

However, the pricing system is set to change from August 3.

Instead of different price options, Tesco will introduce a flat rate of £4.50 for deliveries.

Click and Collect slots will have the fixed price of £1.50.

By doing this, customers picking a peak time slot could save up to £2.50.

However, those who usually book a cheap time could be left out of pocket.

The retailer will introduce the change to try and simplify its delivery service as demand continues to rise.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “Demand for slots remains extremely high at all times of the week, so we are moving to a simpler pricing structure with a flat rate that better reflects the cost of picking, packing and delivering orders.

“This structure is fairer for everyone and means no customers will have to pay the highest slot price – which is currently £7 – as a result of demand.

“Customers who have signed up for our Delivery Saver subscription service will continue to benefit from free deliveries and collections as part of their plan.”

While the update hopes to make the delivery process easier, the change has not been well received by some customers.

A number of shoppers shared their disappointment by posting on Twitter.

One wrote: “As vulnerable customers, it is unbelievable that @tesco has increased our delivery charge by 150 percent.

“The fixed cost of a more flexible 8-hour slot is now 50 percent more than a less flexible four-hour non-priority slot!”

Another added: “Pretty disgusted that you’ve put priority delivery slots up to £4.50 from £2.00 @Tesco!

“We are still shielding so can’t leave the house so rely on this.”

A third commented: “@Tesco are now charging a flat fee of at least £4.50 for a home delivery slot, whatever time of day.

“I understand the thought process behind this but it seems like a lot to me – click and collect for £1.50 is simply not an option for many people who don’t have (and can’t afford) a car.”
