Mum shares her ‘sneaker cleaning recipe’ which helps restore shoes

Mother uses simple three-ingredient ‘recipe’ to bulk clean her children’s sneakers for the new school year – with spectacular results

Keeping children’s white sneakers in pristine condition is always trying. 

So to help, an Australian mother has shared her no fail ‘sneaker cleaning recipe’ which uses a range of household products including dishwasher tablets, and two types of washing liquid.

She revealed that once soaked, the sneakers can be easily washed in the machine with a water temperature set to tepid 30 degrees.

How to create this sneaker cleaning solution: 

* Two Finish Powerball tablets 

* Four scoops of Omo Ultimate 

* 60mLs washing liquid

Explaining her method on Facebook, the mum said first filled a laundry trough with cold water before she added the shoes.

Next, she applied her home-made cleaning formula made using a combination of two Finish Powerball tablets, four scoops of Omo Ultimate and 60mLs washing liquid. 

The solution was swirled through the water and the shoes were left to soak for at least an hour.

After this, the mum popped the sneakers into the washing machine using a water setting of 30 degrees. 

‘Don’t add any more than two pairs of shoes to the washing machine,’ the mum advised.

‘And always put a few old towels in with the shoes to prevent them banging on the washer drum and damaging it.’

Lastly, she recommends drying trainers in the sun to help the solution set.

From the many comments left on the woman’s post, it would seem the trick was one many were also were keen to try.

There was also some debate on the post as to whether washing shoes in water that’s been warmed to 30 degrees could potentially dissolve the glue.

One person said to avoid this situation from arising they only ever washed their sneakers using cold water.

While another added they’d always washed their trainers in slightly warm water and had never had any issues.

Another savvy mum from the Australian Capital Territory also recently revealed how she transformed a pair of Converse sneakers to pristine white using a cleaning product normally reserved for dentures.

The woman, who also shared her cleaning trick online, revealed a box of Polident tablets and water provided a cheap and effective solution.

‘I was about to chuck them last night when I figured I had nothing to lose and left them to soak in Polident overnight and now they are like new!

Explaining the process, the mum said she ‘literally winged it’, and that she simply filled her sink with hot water, dissolved the six tablets, submerged the shoes and then gave them a light scrub.

‘Then this morning I just rinsed with cold water and left them outside to air dry.’
