Most valuable vinyl records 2019 – do you have one worth £3,400 in your collection? – The Sun

MUSIC fans still love listening to vinyl records despite the popularity of music streaming – and some even sell for eye-watering sums.

Roughly 4.3million vinyl records were sold in 2019, according to the BPI, which accounts for the biggest total this century.

Vinyl record sales across the Atlantic have also overtaken CDs for the first time in four decades, according to the Recording Industry Association of America.

Thanks to a new generation of music fans discovering the world of LPs, it means that your old collection could be worth a mint to the right buyer.

As with any collectable, for a vinyl to be valuable it's usually both scarce and in demand.

You'll also rack up a higher price if the condition of the record and sleeve is as close to new as possible.

What should you do if you have a valuable vinyl?

IF you think you’ve got an LP that’s worth a bit extra then you should start by doing your research.

Find out how much your record is worth to a collector by checking the same or similar albums under “sold listings” on eBay.

Compare your LP to other higher selling auctions and ask yourself if it’s in a similar condition? Is it authentic? Is it still in it's original packaging?

If it’s in mint condition then it might be worth selling it through an auction house or directly to a collectables website. If it’s not, it’s probably worth sticking it on eBay for a moderate sum.

Of course, you're probably more likely to have vinyls of the Beatles, Pink Floyd or Rolling Stones at home.

But if the vinyl records are popular songs but by niche bands you've never heard of, they could be especially valuable, Nick Courtney of Vinyl Records UK told The Sun.

He explained: "The valuable records are usually the ones that didn’t sell and therefore are not names you would know or remember.

"The period from 1964 to 1972 was particularly collectible as bands were trying to copy the sound of the Beatles and Rolling Stones.

"It was the prime time for beat and psych music as bands were experimenting with new sounds but also failing to obtain commercial success."

While it's the obscure records by niche bands that are worth the most, we've scanned completed listings on eBay to find out which popular ones are the most valuable.

From Pink Floyd to The Beatles, these are the albums that have sold for the most cash at auction recently.

The Beatles – Please Please Me – £4,600

This vinyl of The Beatles' "Please Please Me" is reportedly one of only 900 copies ever produced in the stereo issue format with the gold design.

The album hit the top of the UK charts in May 1963 and stayed there for 30 weeks.

Perhaps no wonder then that the vinyl record racked up an eye-watering sum of £4,600 when it sold on eBay in November after attracting 34 bids.

The eBay seller said there are "very very limited spindle marks", so reckoned the song hadn't been played too much over the years.

Tony Boothroyd of Vinyl Tap told The Sun: "Condition makes a massive difference on price – a perfect copy [of this album] can sell for over £12,000."

Skids – Scared to Dance – £2,073.60

Another vinyl album that sold for a hefty sum recently is "Scared to Dance" by Scottish new wave band Skids.

Similar to The Beatles, it's another debut studio album and was released in February 1979.

The eBay seller said the album was new as it'd never been played, but admitted that the corners of the sleeve were slightly scuffed due to storage.

In the end, the vinyl sold for £2,073.60 on eBay.

Mr Boothroyd told The Sun the item is "legendary" because the blue vinyl pressing was withdrawn.

He added: "I would have estimated the price of £700 – this is very high but someone was obviously very keen."

Pink Floyd – Arnold Layne – £2,000

This vinyl record features Pink Floyd's first single "Arnold Layne" and second track "Candy and a Currant Bun".

The single is about a transvestite who steals women's clothes from washing lines.

The eBay seller said they had owned the vinyl since its was released in 1967 and had looked after it "religiously".

It sold for £2,000 on eBay in mid-November after attracting seven bids.

Complex – £1,232

This vinyl album by Blackpool band Complex was only produced in 99 copies.

Mr Boothroyd said it is "one of the rarest and most in demand rock album by collectors".

If the album was in perfect condition, it could easily sell for £7,000-£8,000 or even more, he added.

The eBay version wasn't in great shape though so in the end, it sold for £1,232 on eBay last month.

Matthew Larkin Cassell – Pieces – £1,000

Matthew Larkin Cassell's funk and soul album "Pieces" sold for £1,000 on eBay in October after attracting six bids.

The seller said the track had been played and came with some light marks, but no clicks.

The album was only released in 300 copies and usually comes signed.

The owner made a good deal as the album typically sells for around £700, Mr Boothroyd said.

Rolling Stones – Let It Bleed – £800

Last but not least, "Let It Bleed" by the Rolling Stones also fetched a high price on eBay recently.

It was the band's eight album in the UK, released in 1969.

It attracted a whopping 93 bids and went on to sell for £800 on eBay in November.

Mr Boothroyd said it sold for the high sum due to the fact that it's mint and the first pressing.

He added: "You can find this [album] reasonably easily but usually heavily played and never in near mint."

How to avoid the dangers of selling your LP on eBay

SELLING things on eBay can be a big money earner – when you're doing it right. Here are the dangers you need to avoid if you want to make a profit:

  • You need to set a minimum price on your auction. It needs to be higher or at least value to what you're selling, otherwise it could be bought for less than it's worth.
  • Even if your item sells, there's no guarantee the buyer will cough up. When you set up the auction you can opt for the highest bidder to pay straight away.
  • Don't forget that eBay will charge you a sellers fee if you sell your item. You'll be charged 10 per cent of the sale, so take this into consideration when you're listing your item.

Last year, albums by David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix were also among the albums that sold for the most cash.
