Joe Giudice's Immigration Appeal Just Got Denied — Here's What It Means For the 'Real Housewives' Star
Joe Giudice, the husband of reality television star Teresa Giudice, who stars in the Bravo show The Real Housewives of New Jersey, was recently released from prison after serving close to four years behind bars for crimes committed nearly a decade ago. Now, he’s hoping to remain in the United States with his family, but his recent immigration appeal just got denied. Here’s what it means for his future.
Joe and Teresa Giudice were arrested on several fraud charges in 2013
Back in 2009, Joe and Teresa Giudice filed for bankruptcy after building their massive Towaco, New Jersey mansion. In 2013, Joe Giudice and his wife were arrested for allegedly committing mail, wire, and bankruptcy fraud. The court case lasted quite a while, and the two were found guilty and sentenced to prison in 2014. Teresa was sentenced to 15 months in jail but ended up serving only about 11 months; Joe was sentenced to 41 months, and he left for prison after Teresa returned home. Joe was released in early 2019, but his future looks extremely unclear.
A judge ruled that Joe would be deported at the end of his sentence
Joe wasn’t born in the United States, and he’s not a U.S. citizen. He was born in Italy but moved to the U.S. with his family when he was only a year old. Since then, he’s been raised in the U.S. and has said this is the only home he knows. However, during his lifetime, he never sought U.S. citizenship, which meant that if Joe committed a crime, he could easily be deported. He had a deportation hearing back in October 2018, and the judge ruled that Joe’s fraud convictions warranted deportation. Joe and his family vowed to fight the ruling and were disappointed with the outcome.
Joe and his lawyers appealed the deportation, but the appeal was just denied
As soon as the family learned that Joe would be deported, Joe, Teresa, and Joe’s lawyers decided to appeal. After another long wait, a judge denied Joe’s appeal in April 2019. “… The Board of Immigration Appeals dismissed Giuseppe Giudice’s case appeal on April 11, 2019,” an immigration representative told Page Six. “In dismissing the case, the BIA affirmed the immigration judge’s decision of removal dated Oct. 10, 2018.” This meant that Joe’s deportation would go through. However, the family was saddened to hear that Joe may be returning to Italy, and they’re not yet done fighting.
Joe plans to appeal once more, but his future in the U.S. is in limbo
Joe and his lawyers plan to appeal the ruling once more with the hope he will be able to stay in the U.S. with his family. Joe has remained in federal custody since March 14, since his deportation status is pending. As of now, he won’t be staying in the U.S., but things could change if a judge rules in his favor. Teresa and the couple’s four daughters all live in the United States, and Teresa previously said that she would divorce Joe if he were sent back to Italy.
