Heroic girl, 5, saves mum’s life with call to dad saying ‘mammy is on the floor’

A five-year-old girl saved the life of her mum who had a stroke by Facetiming her dad.

Little Pryia called Damien Galvin while he on his way to work after Mary Constant collapsed at their family home in Cork, Ireland.

She frantically told him: "Mammy is on the floor and she can't get up."

Damien told Red FM that he does not usually answer while driving but "for some strange reason" he decided to pick it up, Cork Beo reports.

He said: "I saw her name on the phone and just decided to pick up which I don't usually do but I just had a feeling for some strange reason that I needed to answer the call.

"She was crying and said that mammy was drinking her tea and now she was on the floor and can't get up. I asked her what she meant and she just kept saying that mammy was on the floor and couldn't get up.

"She turned the camera around so I could see her and that was when I could see that Mary was on the floor in the kitchen and she looked very distressed."

Damien taught Priya how to use FaceTime on her iPad a few months ago so she could call her cousin, grandparents and his family when ever she wanted to.

Once he saw that his fiancé was in distress, he hung up and called Mary's sister and parents who live locally.

Thankfully Mary's sister and her husband were able to get to the house quickly and called an ambulance when they got inside.

Damien said: "They tried to get in through the back door but it's a new house so they couldn't get through the double sliding doors and on the inside there is a latch. Her dad was ready to break down the door but then Priya was able to open the latch and let them in".

Paramedics rushed 35-year-old Mary to hospital where doctors said it was the swift actions of Priya that saved her life.

Damien said that while thanking his partner's surgeon he realised just how vital a role Priya played in getting Mary the urgent help she needed.

"An ambulance came within about 40 minutes and Mary was seen to within seconds when she got there and she had a scan and that is when we found out that she had a stroke. A clot had travelled to the left side of her brain and that side had completely shut down".

"It happened on the Monday and on the Tuesday I met Mary's surgeon when I was on my way up to her and I thanked him for what he had done and he said there is no need to thank me for a job that I do every day, you have a little five year old girl who is the real hero".

"The surgeon told us that with a stroke time is precious and that without Priya, Mary wouldn't be here today. She doesn't even know it yet but she is an absolute hero."

"Priya wouldn't have known that Mary was having a stroke, she just knew that her mam was distressed and that she couldn't get up".

"Mary knew what Priya was doing but she just couldn't do anything, she couldn't get off the ground. She couldn't physically move".

Doctors are unsure as to what caused the stroke and Damien said they don't know if it is related to the birth of their four-week-old son Noah.

Mary's surgeons did say however that her young age meant time was on her side and that she was very lucky.

Relieved Damien said that he will never stop Priya from playing on her iPad ever again and that she can spend as much time on her device as she wants as she saved her mum's life.

"I know we all give out to our kids about being on their tablets and and all this kinda stuff but when it comes to this she saved her mother's life so she can use it as much as she likes," he said.

"Mary is walking and talking. She is up and about and moving her hands. She is going down stairs and walking with me and her sister and her parents. Hopefully all going well she will be home by the weekend.
