Harrowing photo shows blood covered doorway where Jill Dando was murdered

A harrowing photograph showing the blood covered doorway where Jill Dando was murdered has been released 20 years after she was killed.

In a crime that shocked the nation, TV favourite Jill was gunned down in the middle of the day on her doorstep in Fulham, London, on April 26, 1999.

The chilling image, aired on BBC's The Murder of Jill Dando, shows a pool of blood at the bottom of the doorstep.

A trail of blood can also be seen on the path leading up to the house, with spots all over the tiles.

And a handbag eerily remains by the foot of the door, with the doormat moved out of place.

From the photo, the path and the garden appear disturbed, with unidentified items strewn.

The brutal slaying of the Crimewatch presenter remains one of the most infamous unsolved crimes of the last 20 years.

One of Jill's neighbours found her lifeless body outside her London home at around midday on the day she was shot.

The traumatised resident of the quiet street has now spoken out about the gruesome discovery she made.

Vida Saunders, who's previously only spoken to the police, revealed she found the television star, 37, slumped in a pool of blood still clutching her house keys in one hand.

She added that the disturbing scene was punctuated by the noise of Dando's mobile phone, which was going off "constantly" inside her bag.

Saunders told Mail Online she was having tea at a neighbour's home when another friend, Helen Doble, knocked at the door and begged her to come with her to an address in the next street.

Helen had walked past a disturbing scene and wanted someone else to see it too.

Vida revealed she bizarrely took her mug of tea with her as she walked over to the house.

Vida said: "I don’t think I fully grasped what I was going to see and it seems odd now, with hindsight, but I took my mug of tea with me…

"She was in a pool of blood, and I noticed her lips were blue and there were some small drips of blood running from her nose. I think we knew immediately that she was critically injured.

"She was still clutching a set of keys in one hand, probably her door keys or possibly her car keys. The handles of her handbag were over the other arm and her mobile phone was inside, ringing constantly…"

Vida said the horrifying image has given her many sleepless nights ever since.

The 999 call made by Helen was featured as part of the BBC1 documentary which aired this evening.

In the frantic call to emergency services Helen can be heard sobbing after coming across Jill's body moments after she was shot dead. 

And in the programme Helen retraces her steps on that tragic day.

Barry George, now 58, was found guilty of Jill's murder in 2001.

He spent seven years in prison before his acquittal in 2008.

Now 20 years later, officials are still no closer to solving the case.
