SOPHIE Wessex has been secretly volunteering by helping to make lunches for NHS staff during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Countess of Wessex, who has been referred to as “the Queen’s favourite”, has been helping out weekly, working with professional chefs.

According to the Daily Mail the project has been organised by the millionaire British financier Ian Wace who is producing almost 60,000 meals a week for NHS staff across London.

Prince Edward’s wife was introduced to the project by events planner Peregrine Armstrong-Jones who helped to organise Princess Eugenie’s wedding.

Sophie, 55, has since been making low-key, weekly appearances as Britain battles against the coronavirus.

Speaking to the Mail, Armstrong-Jones was quick to praise the countess: “Sophie's done a fabulous job.

“She's got stuck into everything, cooking, prep work and cleaning. She's done it privately, without any fanfare, and the staff think she's incredible.”

And kind-hearted Sophie has been volunteering elsewhere too, last week offering her services to catering company Rhubarb.

The company shared snaps of the royal mum-of-two hard at work preparing meals to be delivered to hospitals on Instagram.

The images were captioned: “Thank you to Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex for joining us today and working so hard in the kitchen at rhubarb to prepare food for our heroic NHS Hospital Teams.

“With further thanks to Marshall Wace – Mealforce and Helpforce – for their generosity in funding this.”

Sophie, 55, is known to have a strong bond with the Queen, having been previously described as her "favourite" daughter-in-law.

"She is trusted and relied on by the Queen in a way I couldn't say applied to the Duchess of Cambridge or the Duchess of Cornwall," says a senior royal aide.

"She is like another daughter to Her Majesty, they are that close."
