From supersize metallics to lavish slogans, the hair clip has had a makeover

THEY were once only used to hold down unruly, flyaway tresses, but the humble hair clip has undergone an impressive makeover. From supersize metallics to lavish slogan clips, if you are not littering your ’do with clips of various shapes and sizes then you are so last year.

Unsure of how to accessorise your hair without feeling like you are right back at school? Do not panic. To show you how it is done, hairdresser to the stars Andrew Jose tells JENNY FRANCIS how to secure the best hair accessories on the high street.

The embellished curl

STEP ONE: Using hair tongs, wrap large sections of hair around the curler and hold for ten seconds, then release.

Wrap different sections going alternate ways.

STEP TWO: Take reasonably sized sections from either side of the front of the hair and twist. Bring them together at the back of the hair to meet in the middle.

STEP THREE: Secure in place with two or more oversized, embellished clips.

The sleek clipper

STEP ONE: Split straight hair into a clean middle parting using a tail comb and running along the scalp – just off centre.

STEP TWO: Apply hair wax to front of hair, either smoothing with fingers or using a hair wax brush. This gives a sleek and smooth finish by controlling hair and removing flyaways.

STEP THREE: Using straight clips of the same length but slightly different in style, slip into place at different angles at the side of the head to create an asymmetric look.

The mini clip

STEP ONE: Divide hair into small sections around two inches thick. Using thin hair tongs, wrap the sections around the heated curler and hold for ten seconds, then release.

Wrap different sections going alternate ways.

STEP TWO: Using a thin comb, take small sections of curled hair and backcomb for big volume. Comb it from the mid-length of the hair back up towards the scalp.

STEP THREE: Choose a mini, understated clip and nestle it into the big volume style at the top of the head, about five inches from the parting.

Use a range of different clips, pin the hair in place at different heights along the head for this style

STEP ONE: Using a pair of straighteners, section hair into small pieces and, starting at the root, run the irons down the entire length of the hair until straight.

STEP TWO: Create a mini plait by splitting hair into three thin sections at the forehead and crossing them. When you reach the end, secure the plait with a clear tie. Do this a few more times on the same side.

STEP THREE: Brush hair back behind the ear, leaving a few strands out. Then, using a range of different clips, pin the hair in place at different heights along the head.
