Wendy Williams revisits dark past with drugs after return to TV

Just one day after making her hotly anticipated return to her talk show following an extended absence, Wendy Williams delved into her history with drug addiction.

Williams — who has spoken candidly about her cocaine and crack abuse in the past — revisited her dark past during Tuesday’s show by referring to herself “a walking addict.”

“Once you’re a substance abuser, you have to battle that for the rest of your life,” she said. “I’ve told you about my ten-year ride with the cocaine and the crack. Oh, yes, crack is wack — but it was very good to me at a particularly stupid point in my life. … I was a mess, functioning, killing myself. I realize that I am a walking addict. Do you know what I’m saying? You can’t just clean it up and stop it and think it’s not going to affect you.”

After more than two months away from her show, the 54-year-old made her return to the airwaves on Monday, reiterating that her Graves’ disease — accompanied by a plethora of MRIs, cat scans and blood pressure tests — was the reason for her absence. However, Williams’ hiatus was hit by rumors that a rocky marriage could be to blame (Williams denied on Monday that her relationship with Kevin Hunter is over.)

“I had wasted a lot of my life, burning up my insides, which aren’t burnt, thank God, but you never know when it could pop up,” Williams said Tuesday. “So I constantly have to watch the inside of my body because of hard partying, plus, you know, the thyroid. Just a mess.”

Williams brought up her drug addiction during her “Hot Topics” segment while talking about Luke Perry, who died at the age of 52 on Monday after suffering a stroke last week. Williams said she wondered whether Perry had struggled with substance abuse, although there is no evidence out there that points to it.
