Strictly’s Gorka says daughter Mia will have a career in dancing: ‘She never stops’

Strictly Come Dancing professional Gorka Marquez has opened up about his daughter Mia’s love of dancing, revealing he thinks the three year old will have a career in the profession.

Speaking exclusively to OK!, the 32 year old, who shares Mia with actress fiancée Gemma Aktinson, says: “Mia’s only three but ever since she learned to walk she’s never stopped dancing.

“Whenever there’s music on, she wants to dance. I was on the phone to her before this and she was like: ‘Look Papa,’ and she started dancing. It’s very cute.

“I think she will have a career in dancing, musical theatre or singing, and she loves acting. I think she gets a lot from Gemma [Atkinson].”

Mum Gemma, who is now a presenter on Hits Radio, has starred in soaps including Hollyoaks, Emmerdale and Casualty.

She and Gorka met when Gemma took part in the 15th series of Strictly in 2017. She was partnered with Slovenian dancer Aljaž Škorjanec, who announced his departure from the BBC One series earlier this year.

The star 37, welcomed Mia back in 2019 after a dramatic birth which saw her haemorrhage and little Mia weigh only 4lbs 10oz.

Gorka is excitedly waiting to find out who he will be partnered with out of the 15 new shiny celebrities taking part in this year’s series, which kicks on September 17.

Opening up about finding inspiration for their dance routines each year, the Spanish dancer explains: “As it’s a new celebrity every year it’s a new way to see dance through their eyes.

“People say: ‘Aren’t you bored after six years?’ but it’s like I’m seeing it through the celebrities’ eyes for the first time and that gives me motivation and inspiration to create new numbers.

“I get to know what they like and what they don’t like, their background and their profession.”

He adds: “The most important thing is making sure the celebrities have the best time.”

As for how the star keeps his energy up during the series’ run, which sees it grace our screens from September to December, Gorka continues: “We get fed by the celebrity, so the more they get invested in the show and grow the more we want to do.

“Sometimes, I go through the whole series sleeping four hours a day, and then when it gets to the final, the next day I’m KO’d. My phone rings, and I change my Whatsapp to ‘don’t call me’.”

This year will see the biggest pro line-up in Strictly history, with Gorka, Nadiya Bychkova and last year’s winner Giovanni Pernice making up just some of those who are returning, while newbies Lauren Oakley, Michelle Tsiakkas, Carlos Gu and Vito Coppola will also be taking to the dancefloor.
