Chris Cuomo Says He’s Lost 13 Pounds in 3 Days Following His Coronavirus Diagnosis

On Wednesday, Chris Cuomo opened up about his coronavirus symptoms following his COVID-19 diagnosis on March 31. The CNN anchor, who is currently working from his basement where he is quarantined away from his family, said he’s experienced sleepless nights, a high fever, extreme weight loss, and even hallucinations.

“This virus came at me—I’ve never seen anything like it,” he said on his primetime show. “Anybody who has ever seen me spar will tell you my first round is never my best, and this has proven no different with coronavirus. Now I know what I’m up against.”

He explained that he’s “never had anything like it.” When speaking with CNN anchors Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Anderson Cooper, Cuomo revealed that he lost 13 pounds in just three days. “Now, I’m a big guy, I started off at 230 pounds… I’m eating and drinking constantly. I’m just sweating it out, and it’s just the sickness.”

“It was like somebody was beating me with a piñata. I was shivering so much that I chipped my tooth,” he explained. “They call them the rigors.”

That stemmed from his relentless fever—which has spiked up to 103° F and kept him up all night. “I’m telling you, I was hallucinating. My dad was talking to me,” he said of his late father Mario Cuomo. “I was seeing people from college, people I haven’t seen in forever. It was freaky, what I lived through, and it may happen again tonight.”

“I get it now,” he continued. “And if you match that with chest constriction and people can’t breathe, I totally get why we’re losing so many people and why our hospitals are so crowded.”

The father of three urged others to stay home and take the pandemic seriously. “So here’s the message: Don’t be me. But more importantly, be better than we’re being right now,” he told his viewers. “Care enough, not just to stay home, but stay on our leaders to make sure that they’re doing everything they can to limit this. I’m telling you, this is the part of our lives we will live through and remember the most. How do you want to be remembered during this time?”

Despite his symptoms, Cuomo considers himself lucky. “No matter how my journey goes with coronavirus, the life I’ve had, the family I have to take care of me, the ability I have to self-quarantine, and people bringing me food, and my wife and kids, thank God they don’t have it, look how lucky I got here,” he said. “I want you to be thinking of everyone who is not as lucky as I am. They’re dealing with this thing I am but 10 times worse.”
