'Wonderful' student, 21, is stabbed to death in her university flat in the Netherlands
Sarah Papenheim, 21, who studied at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, was found dead on Wednesday.
A 23-year-old Dutch man who police say is known to the victim has been arrested.
He is believed to live in the same building as Sarah, according to her distraught family.
Heartbreaking tributes have poured in for the Minnesota-born psychology student – who was a keen musician that played drums.
Sarah's mum Donee Odegard told ABC Eyewitness News: "She'd walk right up to you like you were friends forever."
Relatives said she wanted to study psychology so she help others following the tragic death of her brother Josh who took his own life in 2015 aged 21.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise £32,000 to help cover the expense of bringing Sarah home.
Emotional tributes have been left on the page in which Sarah is described as "a wonderful person".
In one moving post, friend Tiffany wrote: "There are no words that I can come up with that adequately express how big of a light Sarah was in this world."
She added: "The Papenheim family are all dear to my heart, and have suffered so much already.
"It is unfathomable that this has happened.
"My heart is broken, just broken.
"Your daughter was a brilliant light, and the world will not be the same without her in it."
A spokesman for Erasmus University said: "The university is shocked by this terrible incident and is taking care of upset students and employees and will act towards relatives according to our protocols.
"We encourage our students and staff not to let each other alone in this difficult time and to get in touch with student advisers and psychologists if they want to."
The U.S. State Department offered its "deepest condolences to her family and friends".
A spokesman said: "We are providing all appropriate consular services".
