Woman becomes third to die in just 12 hours after crash involving police car

The woman suffered serious injuries after she was struck by the vehicle which was responding to a 999 call in Bedworth, Warwickshire, at midday yesterday.

Officers stopped at the scene to give first aid and she was taken to hospital by air ambulance but later died.

It's the third collision where a woman has died in a crash involving police this week.

The first involved a Police Community Support Officer who died after her car was hit by a vehicle involved in a police chase in Birmingham.

The second crash happened just 15 minutes later in London when a 26-year-old woman was struck by a cop car responding to a 999 call.

TRAGIC PCSO

At around 11.30pm on Tuesday, off-duty PCSO Holly Burke was killed in a crash after a car being followed by police failed to stop during a 15-minute chase.

The 28-year-old, who had been in the job for 14 months, died on Lordswood Road in the Bearwood area of Birmingham, despite desperate medical efforts.

Unemployed Darren Ogom, 42, of Kings Norton, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, driving without a licence, driving with no insurance and failing to stop for a police officer.

The force said the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, who said investigators have been gathering evidence including body-worn and in-car footage.

999 CALL CRASH

Around 15 minutes later, a woman was hit by a marked police car responding to an emergency call in Walthamstow, east London.

Luam Gebremariam, 26, was giving emergency first aid but died at the scene on Forest Road at around 11.45pm on Tuesday.

She was a refugee from Eritrea who had been living at YMCA Walthamstow for the last 18 months, a spokesman for the association said.

Witnesses claimed the police car sounded its horn moments before the horror smash.

An independent probe into the collision has been launched.
