A growing taste for flavoured British gin and cocktails has dealt a blow to the popularity of wine.

There was a 4.5 per cent fall in the number of bottles of still wine bought in restaurants, pubs and hotels in the past 12 months.

In cash terms, wine sales fell by £146million to just over £3billion while almost one in five people say they are drinking less than a year ago.

The figures come from industry analysts CGA, which said sales of all wine except prosecco have fallen more sharply than any other category in the past year.

The group said sales of gin in the past year rose by nearly 40 per cent in volume and 42 per cent in value. It added cocktails had been another major competitor for wine, with sales topping £600million a year.
