Vegan parents ‘starved baby son who weighed just 17 pounds to death on diet of raw fruit and vegetables’ – The Sun

VEGAN parents who allegedly starved their baby boy to death on a restrictive diet of just raw fruit and vegetables have been charged.

Ryan Patrick O’Leary and Sheila O'Leary's baby weighed just 17 pounds when he died aged 18 months earlier this year.

The mom called 911 in September when she noticed her boy wasn't breathing and felt cold.

By the time paramedics arrived it was too late, according to Cape Coral Police.

State Attorney Amira Fox said the parents – who admitted to police they only fed their children fruits and vegetables – also abused and neglected three other children, ages three, five, and 11.

One of the children had such bad tooth decay that teeth needed to be removed, NBC2 reported.

She said: “The evidence and crime scene, in this case, are gut-wrenching.

"These are images as a mother and State Attorney I will not be able to forget."

At a presser, Amira accused the parents of "torture" and said the boy's death was due to "starvation and extreme lack of care," according to NBC News.

The young boy's weight was nowhere near normal as 17 pounds is only considered good for a 7-month-old.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children should take a "whole diet approach" and eat a mix of vegetables, fruits, grains, low-fat dairy, and quality protein sources.

However, if planned correctly, a vegan diet can be suitable for children if they are given supplemental nutrients.

The O'Leary's were indicted Wednesday on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter, child abuse and two counts of child neglect.

Their arraignment is set for Monday, December 23.
