US government shutdown: Senate fails to reach immigration deal

Democrats are attempting to force an agreement on the DACA immigration programme by refusing to pass a temporary spending bill, but argue the far right is preventing political compromise.

The anniversary of President Donald Trump’s inauguration has been marked by a government shutdown, after the Senate failed to agree on a spending bill.
