UK weather forecast – Massive storm system to sweep across Britain today sparking ANOTHER yellow weather warning for rain and floods

A MASSIVE storm system will sweep across Britain today – sparking yet another yellow weather warning for rain and floods.

A stretch of intense thundery downpours will move up from the south of England this morning – drenching areas with up to 1.5in of rain over just two hours.

The yellow weather warning for thunderstorms stretches from the Welsh border to East Anglia and Oxford to Stoke-on-Trent from 2pm until 10 tonight.

Commuters in this huge area of the Midlands have been warned of lightening strikes, power cuts, flash floods and travel chaos caused by standing water.

The warning added: "Although many places will miss them, heavy showers and thunderstorms may affect parts of the area through Wednesday afternoon, before slowly dying out during the evening.

"A few spots could see as much as 25 mm in an hour, and perhaps 40mm in two or three hours."

Meanwhile, heavy and patchy showers will see soakings for much of the rest of Britain – especially Scotland and Northern Ireland throughout the day.

Forecasters say the jet stream is sitting right over Britain, funnelling grim unsettled conditions in from the Atlantic.

And there's no end in sight to the grey and dreary skies as even more disruptive thunderstorms are in store throughout the week and into the weekend.

LOW PRESSURE

Temperatures will also struggle to climb out of the teens as low pressure brings cool, wet weather.

Met Office forecaster Emma Smith explained the cause of the rotten weather this week.

She said: "The jet stream is sitting right across us right now – funnelling low pressure systems across the country and bringing unstable air, that's why we're having a rotten August.

"I wouldn't recommend going out without a brolly."

And Met Office meteorologist Aiden McGivern said that the Midlands would be the worst affected on Wednesday.

He said: "The rain and wind will move its way northwards and eastwards through the morning, turning wetter across south central and south-eastern England by lunch time."

For the rest of the week, Mr McGivern added: "It's going to be an unsettled few days but the showers should slowly die away by Thursday, there will be showers in eastern Scotland and eastern England as well.

"Further west, the weather should calm down and dry up and brightens up through the day.

"Thursday's not looking bad – there will be some sunny spells and increasingly so through the afternoon.

"Once again, temperatures are not far from average – we are looking at high teens and low twenties."

But more unsettled weather is expected for Friday and the weekend – with heavy rain in the south on Saturday and showers in the north.
