Two women critical after house fire breaks out at Brunswick

Two women are fighting for life in hospital and a man has serious injuries after a house fire broke out at Brunswick in Melbourne’s inner-north in the early hours of Friday.
Victoria Police detectives are investigating after multiple calls to triple zero led emergency services to rush to the scene of the fire, a home on Laura Street, about 12.20am.

Thirty Fire Rescue Victoria firefighters were among those who responded, with crews arriving within four minutes to find the single-storey home fully alight.
Police said a 77-year-old man was able to escape the home, while two women – one aged 74, the other aged 45 – had to be rescued from the blaze by fire crews.

Ambulance Victoria said paramedics treated the three people at the scene, before the two women were taken to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition, and the man was taken to the same hospital with serious injuries but in a stable condition.
Fire Rescue Victoria said crews worked to stop the blaze from spreading to other nearby properties, and had it under control within 45 minutes.
Victoria Police said the circumstances of the fire were unclear. A crime scene was set up and detectives, along with fire investigators and an arson chemist, would be at the scene on Friday.
