Twisted dad ‘stressed about Christmas’ dumped six-month-old baby daughter in freezing pond

Jonathon Zicarelli, 28, walked into police station in Greenwood, Missouri and calmly told stunned officers that he had left the infant in an icy pond in the town and he was sure she was dead.

According to the charge sheet, Zicarelli said he was stressed by the holidays and trying to provide for his family, and he wanted to make things easier for his wife, the Kansas City Star reported.

After he told them what he had done, Greenwood police chief Greg Hallgrimson and Cpl Tom Calhoun immediately rushed to the scene.

The officers found the girl unconscious floating face up with her lungs filled with water in the murky pond.

Cpl Calhoun waded into the thigh-deep water in his black police uniform, Kevlar vest and boots, to retrieve the child.

She had mud in her eyes as well as grass and water in her mouth.

The child appeared lethargic with her eyes wide open after being in the water for about 10 minutes.

One of the officers took her body to the bank, cleared the water from her lungs and began CPR after which she began breathing.

Her wet clothes were removed and a shirt wrapped around her, while officers waited for paramedics to take her to hospital.

The girl's temperature when she arrived at the hospital was 87.9F, well below the normal temperature of 98.6F and she is currently being treated for severe hypothermia.

Zicarelli told investigators he had been planning to kill his daughter for more than 24 hours after having “bad thoughts”,

He said he walked down to the water three separate times before determining he was capable of sinking the child under the surface.

Greenwood police Lt. Aaron Fordham said Zacarelli had “no emotion whatsoever” when he reported the attempted killing and it was “a miracle” the child survived the incident.

“There was absolutely someone watching over that child today,” the officer said.

Zicarelli has now been charged with first-degree domestic assault.
