Trump vows US will not shut down economy again over COVID-19

President Trump, back in the White House after being treated for the coronavirus at Walter Reed Medical Center, on Tuesday said Americans have learned to live with the flu and will do the same with COVID-19, vowing not to shut down the economy again.

“Flu season is coming up! Many people every year, sometimes over 100,000, and despite the Vaccine, die from the Flu. Are we going to close down our Country? No, we have learned to live with it, just like we are learning to live with Covid, in most populations far less lethal!!!,” the president said on Twitter.

The post comes the morning after Trump returned to the White House after undergoing treatment at the military hospital in Bethesda, Md., since being transported there on Friday.

In a video message posted on his Twitter account, a maskless Trump told Americans not to fear the coronavirus.

“I learned so much about coronavirus and one thing that’s for certain, don’t let it dominate you,” the president said. “Don’t be afraid of it. You’re gonna beat it. We have the best medical equipment, we have the best medicines — all developed recently.”

The death toll for the coronavirus in the US has surpassed 210,000 people, however, survival rates are increasing.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that 12,000 to 61,000 people have died from the flu each year since 2010.

The last time the US saw 100,000 flu deaths was in 1968, the CDC said.
