Top-ranking US Space Force officer tests positive for COVID-19

A top-ranking officer in the US Space Force has tested positive for COVID-19, the Air Force said in a statement Wednesday.

Gen. David Thompson took a test Wednesday after learning that a close family member he had contact with had tested positive for the virus, according to the statement. He’ll be self-quarantining and working from home as he recovers from the virus.

“The Department of the Air Force continues to follow established DoD and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention policies and guidelines for COVID,” the statement says.

“Measures include temperature testing, social distancing to the greatest extent possible, the wearing of masks when social distancing is not possible, and contact tracing and quarantining, if needed,” it adds.

The Space Force is a division of the Air Force that was created in 2019 to maintain “mission ready space forces” for warfare in space, according to the US Defense Department.

As of Tuesday, the Air Force had recorded a total of 8,741 coronavirus cases among their military employees.
