Tens of thousands run the annual Great North Run
A Great effort! Tens of thousands take to the streets of the north east for the annual Great North Run – with Mo Farah racing to his sixth win over the half-marathon course
- Each year 57,000 people run through Newcastle’s city centre towards South Shields in the Great North Run
- Runners enjoyed temperatures of up to 60F (16C) and sunny skies along the 13.1-mile route earlier today
- Mo Farah won the annual half marathon for the sixth time and Brigid Kosgei beat the women’s course record
Almost 60,000 people descended on the streets of Newcastle upon Tyne for the Great North Run – where Mo Farah won the men’s elite race when he crossed the line after just 59 minutes and seven seconds.
Each year 57,000 runners race through Newcastle’s city centre towards South Shields as they enjoy music from bands dotted along the route, the cheers of spectators and, at one point, dazzling views of the sea.
And this year was no different as runners basked in temperatures of up to 60F (16C) and sunny skies along the 13.1-mile route from Newcastle upon Tyne and through Gateshead before finishing in South Shields.
Mo Farah won the annual half marathon for the sixth time and Brigid Kosgei beat the women’s course record and the world half marathon record when she finished with a time of one hour, four minutes and 28 seconds.
She finished more than three minutes before her fellow Kenyan runner Magdalyne Masai who crossed the line after one hour, seven minutes and 36 seconds.
And Farah was joined by his wife Tania who finished with a time of one hour, 42 seconds and 37 seconds, just under 40 minutes behind the winner of the women’s race.
One participant spread cheer to other runners by wearing a giant sunflower accessory around his face – while crowds held encouraging signs as they supported family and friends from the roadside.
Some 57,000 runners paid £53 each to register to participate in the annual Great North Run which weaves from Newcastle upon Tyne to South Shields. Clutching bottles of water they enjoyed slightly cooler temperatures earlier today
As runners crossed the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle city centre they blow kisses and hold their hands up in peace signs to cameras capturing the event

Alyson Dixon ran for St Benedict’s Hospice in Ryhope, Sunderland. She told the Shields Gazette: ‘It was fantastic, I loved every second. Literally every inch of the course, there was a “Go on Aly”, “Go on Wonder Woman”‘
