Taliban 'bans girls from secondary schools' in Afghanistan by reopening only for boys
THE Taliban has effectively banned girls from secondary education in Afghanistan after allowing schools to open for boys only.
The country's new education ministry said that schools will be open for males from Saturday after a month of closures.
He said in a statement: "All male teachers and students should attend their educational institutions."
However there was no mention about girls and female teachers.
Aryan Aroon, an activist and writer from Afghanistan who left the country before the Taliban took over told the Washington Post: "Banning girls from attending school is like burying them alive. Don’t let this nightmare turn into reality. It is just beginning."
Since the Taliban seized the power in Afghanistan they claimed they would not enforce the strict oppressive laws of the 90s, when females were mostly excluded from education and work.
The Taliban's education authority had said that this time women will be allowed to attend university.
But the order states that classes must be segregated by sex, or at least divided by a curtain and the students must wear an abaya robe and a niqab.
And under the brutal Taliban regime female students must only be taught by women or "old men" of good character – and end their lesson five minutes earlier than men to stop them from mingling outside.
Last week hundreds of women wearing full-face veils took part in a pro-Taliban rally outside a university pledging commitment to the Taliban's hardline policies on gender segregation.
Meanwhile, in another hit for women's rights in the country, the Taliban appeared to have shut down the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and replaced it with the Ministry of Virtue and Vice.
The Taliban's "moral police" that operated in the 90s previously enforced sharia law on citizens – including a strict dress code and public executions and floggings, reports Reuters.
Despite promises of less extreme laws the group has already imposed new brutal rules for women.
In some circumstances, they have stayed in "waiting rooms" until men have left buildings, while shop fronts featuring female faces have been painted over and newscasters have been replaced on TV.
A pregnant police officer was executed in front of her kids because she reportedly took down the terrorist group's flag.
Thugs linked to the Taliban have been going door to door in Afghanistan kidnapping children as young as 12 to use as child brides and sex slaves since they swept back to power in Afghanistan.
