Six in 10 Britons want Tory MPs to vote to DUMP Boris as leader

Almost six in 10 Britons want Tory MPs to vote to DUMP Boris Johnson as leader tonight – but more than half of Conservative voters want him to STAY in power

  • Opinium poll found 59% want Conservative MPs to remove him from No10
  • But narrow majority of Tory voters (53 per cent) want him to stay in power
  •  Poll also found that people believe that the Tories are more divided than Labour

Almost six in 10 Britons want Tory MP to wield the axe and end Boris Johnson’s time in office tonight.

A new poll by Opinium found that 59 per cent want Conservative politicians to take the opportunity to remove him from No10.

But at the same time a majority of Tory voters (53 per cent) want him to stay, with just a third (34 per cent) wanting him gone.

Meanwhile a poll of Tory members conducted by YouGov found that 53 per cent want him to stay, and more than two fifths (42 per cent) want him removed.

It comes ahead of a crunch vote in Parliament this evening that could decide the future political direction of the country.

Chris Curtis, head of political polling at Opinium, said: ‘Thankfully for the Prime Minister it will be Conservative MPs who decide his future tonight and not members of the public, because it is clear Partygate has damaged the public’s faith in his leadership.

Backbench chief Graham Brady confirmed this morning that at least 54 MPs have asked for a full ballot, which will now happen between 6pm and 8pm, with a result expected at 9pm.

‘Given that most voters now want him to go, even if he does survive tonight’s vote it is clear the Prime Minister has a big task on his hands to turn this around before the next election.’

The PM has sent a letter to MPs pleading for them to ‘draw a line’ under furious infighting, after he suffered a series of huge blows – including his own anti-corruption tsar quitting and rival Jeremy Hunt joining the coup bid.

Mr Johnson is addressing the parliamentary party before that and the results will be declared shortly afterwards.

The Opinium poll of 2,062 people, conducted today, also found that people believe that the Tories are more divided than Labour.

If Mr Johnson loses tonight’s vote, more than half (52 per cent) of those polled by Opinium think he should leave his position immediately, while 37 per cent think he should continue until a new leader is found.

The latter is general way that power is handed over int he result of a prime ministerial resignation.

As things currently stand, just 28 per cent think it’s likely that Boris Johnson will lead the Tories into the next election, while 58 per cent think it is unlikely.
