Police release CCTV footage of man after South Yarra church assault

Police have released footage of a man they want to speak to in relation to the vicious assault of an elderly woman in South Yarra on Saturday morning.

The 78-year-old woman was left with serious injuries after she was attacked while walking to open a church in Barry Street about 6.15.

Her daughter-in-law, Erin Katsavos, told 3AW radio that the woman had a fractured pelvis, a broken wrist and bleeding on her brain in two places.

Ms Katsavos said the woman was left on the church steps for half an hour before a worker found her.

“We are just shocked that it’s happened,” she said.

Police believe a man assaulted the woman before stealing her shopping trolley containing personal items.

“If the person who did this horrendous act is watching, we urge you to hand yourself in to Victoria Police so we can answer some questions,” Senior Constable Peker said.

“We believe somebody knows this individual and will be able to assist.”
