Police forced to close M48 Severn Bridge after man scales tower

Man in twenties is arrested over M48 commuter chaos after ‘scaling 446ft tower on Severn Bridge to fly DRONE’

  • Severn Bridge carriageways closed down shortly after 8am this morning
  • Man alleged to have climbed 446-ft tower to fly drone on the motorway
  • Comes days after 1,000 flights disrupted at Gatwick following drone reports

The Severn Bridge was shut after a man allegedly climbed up a tower on the structure to fly a drone.

Police closed both carriageways on the M48 after a male was reportedly spotted on the 446ft tower.

Cars were brought to a halt for about 30 minutes as emergency services rushed to the motorway.

People vented their fury at the closure on social media as some reflected on the chaos at Gatwick days earlier.

The Severn Bridge (pictured) was closed in both directions after a man reportedly scaled one of its towers to fly a drone

Avon and Somerset police confirmed that a man in his twenties has been arrested for ‘causing a public nuisance’.

Officers said the suspect ‘came down from the tower voluntarily’ following the incident, which occurred shortly after 8am.

It comes just 10 days after about 1,000 flights were disrupted at Gatwick Airport when it was forced to close following reports of a drone flying over the runway.

Two ‘self-styled urban explorers’ scaled one of the Severn Bridge towers earlier this year and posted a series of photographs online. There is no suggestion the incidents are related.
