The messages will ensure help is available for those who need it during quarantine.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: “I know experiencing symptoms can be worrying but for those on their own it will be even more so.

“This daily text service will reassure our most vulnerable that they are not alone and also help them manage their symptoms.”

To register, people must complete an assessment and leave personal details on the 111 online service.

They will be asked to provide their age, mobile number and when symptoms began.

Messages will appear on mobiles from NHS Covid-19.

Prof Jonathan Benger, chief medical officer at NHS Digital, said: “This new service will help people to get the encouragement, advice and support they need.

Those who do not want to receive text messages will be able to opt out at any time.
