Mum shares heartbreaking pic of son, 11, in coma after being run over by 'drink driver' walking home from school

A MUM has shared a heartbreaking picture of her 11-year-old son who has undergone life-saving surgery after being hit by a suspected drink driver.

Finley Rod was walking home from school in Sheffield when he was hit by a driver who fled the scene.

The youngster was rushed to Sheffield Children’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Doctors performed surgery for a decompressed skull fracture and the youngster remains in hospital with his family waiting at his bedside.

His mum, Kelly Ord, said doctors are planning on attempting to wake her son but have “no idea” how he will react after the surgery.

She told The Sheffield Star: “Finley had surgery to remove all the shards from his skull.

“His head took all the impact and there’s a swelling on his brain.

The worst part is not knowing if he will be the same lovely boy when he wakes up

“Sadly, we won’t know the extent of the damage until the doctors wake him up.

“His grandfather and I haven’t left his side since he was admitted and we’ve managed to get a room next to his. We’ve barely slept.

“It’s horrible not being able to do anything for him, we feel so powerless.

“The worst part is not knowing if he will be the same lovely boy when he wakes up.

“It’s every parent’s worst nightmare to get that phone call but we’re just hoping he’s going to be OK.”

Kelly received a phone call on the school on Wednesday afternoon to say that Finley had been hit by a car while walking home.

The driver of the Toyota, a 24-year-old man from Sheffield, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drink or drugs and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

He has been released under investigation.
