Mesut Ozil carjacking thug begs for mercy as he almost loses eye in brutal prison attack by fellow lag – The Sun

ONE of the thugs who tried to rob Arsenal footballer Mesut Ozil has been filmed being savagely beaten in prison by a knife-wielding lag.

In the clip, shared by inmates on WhatsApp, criminal Ashley Smith is seen lying on a cell floor while begging for mercy.

Smith, 30, of Archway, North London, could lose the sight in his right eye after the disturbing assault on Tuesday in which his life was threatened.

In the clip, Smith, who was jailed for 10 years this week for his role in the Ozil carjacking, is accused by the knife-wielding thug of robbing his pal’s mum.

While pleading for the beating to stop, the 30-year-old says: “I can’t see. It wasn’t me. I swear to God it wasn’t me, on my kid’s life.”

But his attacker replies: “If you don’t give me a name now you’re dead.”

The video was filmed on a mobile phone at HMP Pentonville in North London and then was posted on WhatsApp.

Smith appeared in court the day after the attack via videolink with a towel wrapped round his head, reports The Mirror.

He pleaded guilty to the attempted robbery of Arsenal players Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac on July 25 in Hampstead, North London.

In video footage of the failed carjacking, fearless Bosnian defender Kolasinac, nicknamed 'The Tank', is seen fighting off Smith and his accomplice Jordan Northover, 26, – who were brandishing knives and a screwdriver.

The thugs were attempted to steal £200,000 watches from the footballers.

However, the athletes managed to drive away – and despite the criminals giving chase on a moped, they finally fled when Ozil and Kolasinac took refuge in a Turkish restaurant.

Police released footage of the attempted robbery on Thursday as Northover also pleaded guilty.

On Wednesday, Smith’s lawyer Susan Meek asked for a quick sentencing because the criminal “fears for his life” in Pentonville after the knife attack.

She told Harrow Crown Court: “As you can see he has a towel around his head because he was attacked last night.

“He has stitches in his right eye, and he may lose the sight in his left eye. It was made clear to him his life was in danger.

"He is extraordinarily distressed and scared and really wants this to be put to an end as soon as possible.”

The Prison Service said: “An HMP Pentonville prisoner required hospital treatment after an incident on 5 November.

"It would be inappropriate to comment further as police are investigating.”
