Instagrammers are condemned for tone-deaf ‘Pray for Bahamas’ messages featuring belfie photos and bikini pics

Hurricane Dorian has ravaged the Bahamas and lashed the islands as a Category 5 storm in an ‘unprecedented’ 40-hour barrage of wind and rain.
But a number of supposedly ‘heartfelt’ posts on Instagram lamenting the storm have come under fire for being somewhat tone-deaf.
Some Instagram users took to the social media platform to post their condolences to the storm’s victims alongside pictures of themselves in the sunny Bahamas while clad in beachwear.
Geotagged as The Bahamas, model Tatiele Polyana posted a photo of herself on a bright white beach, ankle-deep in crystal-clear water. In an incongruous caption, Polyana wrote: ‘My heart is in (two). A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to know this immensity of clear water, truly a paradise, how sad, my God, to see the desperation of the people in the videos, so many houses, cars, hospitals and places all being devastated by this damn hurricane! Let’s pray for #Bahamas.’

Other Instagram users were quick to post throwback pictures of themselves soaking up the sun on the islands, using the hashtags ‘PrayForBahamas’ or ‘Hurricane Dorian’ (above and below)
In the comments below, other Instagram users accused her of using the tragedy as a way of ‘self promotion’.
‘This is a very odd photo to choose to show your concern for The Bahamas. It honestly seems more like you’re using the hashtag for a tragedy as self promotion,’ they wrote.
‘How is this picture praying for Bahamas?’ another Instagram user questioned with a laughing-crying face emoji.
Other Instagram users were quick to post throwback pictures of themselves soaking up the sun on the islands, using the hashtags ‘PrayForBahamas’ or ‘Hurricane Dorian’.
‘Literally the calm before the storm,’ one Instagrammer captioned her photo.
‘So sad to read in the news about the Bahamas, one of the most beautiful beaches I visited and photographed, friendly people and happy.
‘My heart goes to the families that lost their homes Dorian left a destruction fury, my heart is breaking to see,’ one person wrote.
Alongside another ‘belfie’ photo, one Instagram user wrote: ‘On a serious note though, my favorite (most beautiful) beaches in the world are being torn up by hurricane Dorian as we speak.
‘The Bahamian people are heavy on my heart and in my prayers.’
