Husband, son of prominent federal judge shot at their New Jersey home

The husband and son of a prominent New Jersey federal judge were shot at their home Sunday evening, according to a report.

A gunman opened fire on Judge Esther Salas’s spouse, Mark Anderl, and the child at their North Brunswick home around 5 p.m. — and both are in critical condition, senior law enforcement officials told NBC New York. Salas was not injured.

Salas  — who sentenced “Real Housewives of New Jersey” star Teresa Giudice to more than a year in prison for fraud in 2014 — has served as a U.S. District Court judge in Newark for nine years. She has also been responsible for several other high-profile cases, including ones involving the leaders of street gangs.

Authorities believe Salas’ husband answered the door and was shot by the gunman, the sources told the outlet. When her son came running to see what happened, he was also hit.

Salas is believed to have been in the basement of the home at the time of the attack, the sources said.

A massive law enforcement response was underway Sunday night, officials said.

Salas is the first Hispanic woman to serve on the federal bench in the state. Anderl is a well-regarded criminal defense attorney, according to NBC.
