Girl, 15, shot in stomach trying to fight off carjackers attacking her family

A teenage girl was shot in the stomach as she tried to fight off a carjacking gang targeting her family.

The 15-year-old was sat in the front passenger seat when the vehicle was suddenly surrounded by gunmen.

CCTV shows the four armed men surrounding a red parked car.

They can be heard shouting at the family inside the vehicle to get out.

A young woman then comes running towards the thugs to try to stop them stealing the car, but one of the gang threatens her with his pistol and she runs away.

The family, including a woman carrying a young child, begin to exit the vehicle as the 15-year-old grapples with one of the carjackers on the road.

A gang member then opens fire at the young woman who is hit by the second bullet.

She can be seen being carried by her family to the pavement bleeding profusely.

The man who was in the driver’s seat holds her upright as blood pours from her hip onto the pavement and the thugs drive away in the car.

Local media reports the teenager was taken to a nearby hospital and her condition is described as stable.

The shocking incident occurred in the Jardines de Cerro Gordo colony of Ecatepec, in central Mexico.

Fernando Vilchis Contreras, Mayor of Ecatepec, said: "Insecurity is something we are fighting day by day and we are concerned about it, we are obviously not leaving things aside, we are ready to combat crime head-on."

An investigation has been launched but no arrests have been reported.
