Ex-sanitation worker to run against Michael Gianaris over Amazon debacle

This retired sanitation worker wants to take out the trash!

Ignazio “Iggy” Terranova has filed papers to challenge Queens Sen. Mike Gianaris in next year’s Democratic primary over the scuttled Amazon campus in the district.

Gianaris’ opposition helped prompt Amazon to abort its plan to open a 25,000-worker East Coast headquarters on his turf in Long Island City.

Terranova , 45, started as a garbage collector, worked his way up to supervisor and then citywide officer with the Department of Sanitation’s community affairs.

“Mike hurt our community. He did everything he could to hurt the Amazon deal,” Terranova, a longtime Astoria resident and Department of Sanitation community affairs officer told The Post.

“For 20 years I helped pick up the trash for the city and now I’m going after the senator.

“I want to bring Queens back. I’m about creating jobs. Because of Gianaris we lost a lot jobs. All the jobs go to Manhattan!”

But defeating Gianaris, the powerful Senate deputy majority leader and lifelong Astoria resident, will be a daunting task.

Even a union that supported the Amazon HQ2 campus in Queens— Local 32 BJ of the Service Employees International Union representing building workers — is backing Gianaris’ re-election, a source said.

Gianaris was unfazed by the challenge.

“Anyone is entitled to run for office, but not just anyone has been part of the movement that delivered a historic Democratic Senate Majority resulting in the most progressive legislature New York has ever seen,” Gianaris said.

Gianaris and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez claim they’ve been vindicated in opposing the scuttled deal for the city and state to provide $3 billion in taxpayer subsidies to Amazon to build a campus in LIC — after the e-tail giant last week announced it was creating 1,500 jobs in office space in Hudson Yards with no tax sweeteners. Critics point out that Amazon has only committed to creating a fraction of jobs that it planned for Queens.

Ironically, Gianaris honored Terranova on the Senate floor in June of last year for his service to the city, upon his retirement

“New York City is full of distinguished characters and people who leave an impression. Iggy Terranova is certainly one of them,” Gianaris said.

He praised Terranova’s “outsized personality” as well as his skills and dedication.

Terranova is the second challenger that Gianaris could face on the primary ballot.

Pro-Amazon Republican-turned Democrat Justin Potter, founder of the e-commerce company Nettleton Hollow, also has thrown his hat in the ring to challenge the powerful Senate deputy majority leader.

Meanwhile other New Yorkers reached out to Gov. Andrew Cuomo to back a primary challenge to Gianaris, according to correspondence obtained by The Post.
