Coronavirus could kill 400,000 Brits if the deadly bug sweeps across the nation, ‘concerned’ expert warns

CORONAVIRUS has the "potential" to kill 400,000 Brits if the killer bug sweeps across the nation, an expert has warned.

Professor Neil Ferguson said the deadly disease “concerns” him more than any other illness he has worked on.

Experts have claimed that up to 60 per cent of the world could contract coronavirus – a figure that could also be applicable to Britain.

Out of the infected population it is estimated that 1 per cent could die, which in the UK’s case would be hundreds of thousands of people.

Professor Ferguson, from the School of Public Health, Imperial College London, told Channel 4: “I would much prefer to be accused of overreacting than under reacting.

“This virus is the one which probably concerns me the most out of everything I’ve worked on.”

He added: “Given what we know a lot about how these viruses are spread we have lots of data from past epidemics.

“Given how transmissible this virus appears to be and that fact that at least all adults can be infected, we have much less data in children, then 60 per cent is a reasonable figure.

“Within the first 12 months or so. What we don’t know at the moment is if everybody infected. What proportion might die and what are the risk groups?
