‘This is NOT the year for Dry January!’ Britons abandon sober start to 2021 after less than a week following start of new national lockdown – as Twitter is flooded with hilarious booze-fuelled memes

  • One Briton wrote on Twitter ‘to hell with the dry January!’ after announcement
  • Another joked, ‘Well, so much for Dry January,’ after new lockdown imposed
  • Celebrities including Piers Morgan and Laura Whitmore also joined in

Many Britons have abandoned the annual Dry January after less than a week of 2021 following the new national lockdown announced by Boris Johnson on Monday.

Following Mr Johnson’s drastic measures, put in place to combat a surge in infections and the threat of the NHS collapsing, people took to social media to joke about giving up on trying to be sober in the first month of 2021.

One Briton posted an image of a man drinking from a hat fitted with two pints of beer and wrote, ‘to hell with the dry January!’.

Another joked, ‘Well, so much for Dry January,’ while a third said they had lasted for only six days.

Celebrities also joined in the urge to give up on being sober, including former winner of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here Vicky Pattison, as well as Love Island host Laura Whitmore.

The posts came after Mr Johnson on Monday ordered people to stay at home and said all non-essential shops had to close.

He said people should only leave their homes for exercise or if they absolutely cannot work from home.

Pubs and bars were also banned from selling takeaway alcohol, forcing nearly all to shut their doors entirely.

Ordinary Britons who were able to find some humour in the bleak situation took to social media in their droves to joke about giving up on Dry January.

The annual campaign began in 2013 and has since morphed into a global movement observed by millions of people every year.

But among the hundreds of other people taking to social media, one joked that instead of doing Dry January, they would be ‘absolutely drenched with alcohol’ to ‘make up for the long lasting trauma of 2020’.

Another wrote: ‘Y’all I’m about to fail my dry January.’

A third posted a video of a big cat drinking from a bottle and wrote, ‘How it started and How it’s going’.

Others said their efforts ended right at the point the new lockdown was announced.

One pointed to the Prime Minister’s Downing Street press conference in which the new lockdown was announced.

They wrote: ‘The 8pm announcement… When Dry January goes right out the window.’

They posed a picture of Poldark star Aidan Turner demanding, ‘Fetch me the rum!’.

Another Briton joked, ‘Dry January… it was a good run’.

Good Morning Britain presenter and MailOnline columnist Piers Morgan also joked: ‘If you’re still planning to do #Veganuary or #DryJanuary after that announcement, see a doctor.’

This Morning star Philip Schofield has also jumped onboard the no Dry January bandwagon.

The booze-loving This Morning presenter said that it ended just five minutes after Boris Johnson’s lockdown announcement.

The 58-year-old telly star – who owns his own wine brand – told his 3.1million Instagram followers.

He posted a snap of his iPhone alarm setting.
