British brothers aged seven and nine die after being found ‘lifeless’ in outdoor swimming pool while on holiday in Germany

  • The boys’ parents alerted the police on Thursday at around 6pm on Thursday
  • Emergency response teams were dispatched to Lake Rursee in western Germany
  • Bodies of the brothers were pulled from the lake and resuscitated by paramedics
  • They were flown to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but could not be saved

Two British boys have died while swimming in a German lake, according to reports.

The boys – two brothers aged nine and seven – were pulled from the water after first being reported missing by their parents at around 6pm on Thursday.

Several police cars rushed to the scene at Lake Rursee in western Germany, and specialist rescuers took to the water in search of the pair.

Their bodies were found and pulled from the water, and paramedics were able to resuscitate them, according to German news outlet Bild.

They were then flown to hospital, where they were pronounced dead today.

The natural outdoor pool area in Simmerath, near Aachen, is a popular destination for tourists. The family had been enjoying 87 Fahrenheit (31C) temperatures when tragedy struck.

Police told Bild they first recieved an emergency call at 5:59pm on Thursday, and dispatched several response vehicles to the scene immediately.

Specialist teams from Germany’s Technical Relief Agency (THW) and the DLRG (German Life Saving Organisation) followed soon after.

Bild reported that it was a first aider who found the bodies of the children, lifeless in the water. They were rescued from the lake and resuscitated by the emergency doctors, before being airlifted to clinics near Cologne in a critical condition.

Sadly, they could not be saved, and were pronounced dead a day later. 

The circumstances surrounding the death of the boys is under investigation, with officials examining whether any negligence played a part.
