Brit tourist tells how she ‘went back in time’ to celebrate New Year twice

A British tourist has revealed how she deliberately "travelled back in time" and flew across timezones to celebrate New Year's Eve twice.

Cathy Price, 60, first saw in the start of 2020 in New Zealand and less than 24 hours later celebrated it again in remote Rarotonga, the largest of the Cook Islands.

The Preston-based retired fitness instructor pulled off the challenge by catching a morning flight from Auckland Airport in New Zealand at 8.55am on January 1, 2020 and landing at Rarotonga International Airport at 1.45pm on December 31, 2019 where she "went on to see in the New Year for a second time".

The remote island is 23 hours behind Auckland.

Cathy, who pulled off the stunt with her friend Samantha, today described it as "a surreal experience" and joked "my Fitbit went mad".

Mother-of-one Cathy said: "After many years of wondering whether it was possible to travel back in time, I bought a world map of timezones.

"On discovering the possibility of flying from Auckland to Rarotonga – a four hour flight – I was besides myself to find out I could do this on New Year's Day.

"I flew to Auckland on December 27 and spent a few days, then celebrated the New Year."

She added: "It was a surreal experience, my mind struggled to adjust and my Fitbit went mad."

Cathy's an absolute travel enthusiast who's travelled to 85 different countries. Since visiting Rarotonga, she's decided the Cook Islands is her most favourite of all.

"Rarotonga is only 11km (6.8 miles) long and not even shown on most world maps," she explained.

"It is a fantastic little island, the people are incredibly proud of it, friendly and very cultural.

"I have visited 85 countries in the world and Rarotonga is my favourite place – it's paradise."

Cathy and Samantha, from Australia, spent their first new year in Auckland's famous Sky Tower, which they had already bungee jumped off a few days before.

For their second New Year's Eve celebration, they were on the beautiful Rarotonga beach watching the fireworks.

It's not even the first time that Cathy has made the news for an unusual achievement.

Back in 2015 she made headlines when she completed her challenge of drinking at all 656 Red Lion pubs in the UK. It took her five years.
