Zack Snyder’s Justice League is finally out on streaming services in the UK. Fans have been taking to social media to share their joy at the film’s arrival, which has so far trounced its predecessor in the reviews. The film is, however, much longer than its original story, which was released in 2017.

How long is the Snyder Cut?

The Snyder Cut, as it has been called, has a staggeringly long runtime.

The length of the film is 242 minutes, which is a whopping four hours and three minutes.

This is more than twice the length of the original 2017 movie, which was 120 minutes, or two hours.

The reason for the director’s cut is because there were some post-production issues which meant the film was not as Zack Snyder intended.

In May 2017, Zack stepped down from directing duties due to the death of his daughter, Autumn.

This meant Marvel director Joss Whedon, along with Warner Bros themselves, began work on the film to edit and bring it to the cinema.

To do this, there would need to be reshoots of certain scenes, some of which led to ridicule when Henry Cavill, who played Superman, was forced to have his moustache removed using VFX due to his commitments to another movie, Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

These reshoots cost more than double what they might usually be expected to, with the budget set at around $25million (£18million.)

In the end, the final version of the film, as cut by Joss and Warner Bros, was not well-liked, and got universally bad reviews.

On Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregator, it received a 40 percent rating, which meant there were certainly more bad reviews than good ones.

As a result of this, fans began calling for Zack’s version to be released, given he had a great amount of filming and scenes which were not included.

Despite the campaign for the Snyder Cut, Warner Bros looked unlikely to release one, leaving some to assume the elusive version was purely a myth.

In 2019, Zack admitted his version does exist, but Warner Bros were responsible for its release, which was finally confirmed via HBO Max in May 2020.

It was reported much of the main cast had to return, albeit remotely to help complete the cut, and the cost for special effects and other aspects of reshoots would cost the studio a furth $70million (£50million.)

While the film does not seem to open up for more sequels, there are some questions posed by the film and characters introduced which some fans will likely want to see even more.

According to an interview given at the IGN Fan Fest, Zack has confirmed he would be interested in doing a sequel to this film.

Given the excitement around the Snyder Cut, it seems there is a fan appetite for continued work by the director, especially as his version received much better reviews.

As well as that, reports have suggested Ray Fisher, who played Cyborg, would only return to the franchise if it were Zack helming the film after he said Joss’ behaviour was “gross, abusive, and unprofessional” on set.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Ray suggested Joss’ irritation at his departure from the MCU was apparent when they worked on set together.

He said: “You could tell very quickly that [Whedon] was very upset that people did not like Avengers: Age of Ultron very much.

“This is what I gathered from the first conversation that I had with him.

“There was a bit of this sort of egotistical narcissism that ended up going into everything that he was trying to do…

“In my first conversation creatively with him, he kept accidentally calling Diana ‘Natasha’, which is crazy stuff.”
