Will Joaquin Phoenix's Joker Appear in Future 'Batman' Films?

Though we’d just gotten used to seeing Jared Leto as Batman’s most infamous adversary, Joaquin Phoenix’s take on the villainous clown has sparked more conversation and debate than anyone who has stepped into the role since the late Heath Ledger. The Walk the Line actor stars in Todd Phillips’ unsettling Joker, which follows aspiring comedian Arthur Fleck who is desperate to find a connection in the rapidly deteriorating Gotham City.

Suffering from an unnamed mental illness — Arthur’s sole companions are his mother and the therapists assigned to try and help him. Isolated and bullied–Arthur quickly descends into madness transforming into the terrifying criminal mastermind, Joker.

Despite the pushback and concerns about the film, it is now the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. So what will happen next with Joaquin Phoenix’s supervillain?

Will ‘Joker’ get a sequel?

If you’ve seen the terrifying R-rated film, then you know that the ending opens up a world of possibilities to what might happen with Arthur Fleck’s Joker next. However, many fans of the film are arguing that a sequel to Phillips’ movie wouldn’t be the right move. Phillips himself told Reelblend,

Well, I don’t think we’re gonna make a second one. That’s just not in our plans. But for fun, have me and Joaquin bounced around ideas? We were doing it when we were shooting because that’s what you do sometimes.

Will Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker appear in Robert Pattinson’s ‘The Batman’?

If you didn’t know, Robert Pattison is stepping into the Caped Crusader’s shoes. The Batman, which will forever be called Battison was recently announced. Zoë Kravitz has also been cast as Catwoman in The Batman. Director Matt Reeves told The Hollywood Reporter,

It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been.

However, don’t expect to see Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck in the Pattinson-led film. The timeline simply does not line up. However, Joker could serve as the perfect prequel for The Batman.

‘Joker ‘could be the beginning of an anthology series

Instead of putting Joker directly into Batman’s world –watching him evolve as a character over several films before he becomes Bruce Wayne’s enemy would serve as a very intriguing set up. It would give us a window into the ever-evolving world of Gotham City while giving us a better insight into Joker’s motives.

As interesting as Auther Fleck was to watch as a character– Phoenix’s Joker also left its audience with a few questions. When we meet Arthur, he already has several mental health issues and his relationship with his mother is strained.

Unpacking his childhood as well as the events that lead to his manic turn would probably intrigue audiences. However, just as Phillips shot down rumors of a sequel it should be noted that Warner Bros and the DC Extended Universe have no issue with one-off interpretations of the diabolical clown. Still, we’d interested to see what Jard Leto can do with the character outside of the puzzling world of Suicide Squad.

We’ll have to wait and see if Joker makes an appearance in The Batman when it debuts on June 25, 2021.
