Why did Nadine Coyle and Cheryl fall out? Girls Aloud feud explained
THEY were two fifths of one of the UK's most successful girl bands of all time, but despite topping the charts together rumours of a rift have always plagued Nadine and Cheryl.
But what actually happened? And have the popstars made up since? Here's what we know about their alleged feud…
Why did Nadine Coyle and Cheryl fall out?
Cheryl and Nadine became caught up in a public war-of-words after Girls Aloud went on hiatus in 2009 and eventually broke up.
The pair publicly slammed each other in raging interviews.
Nadine made a series of shock claims that she’d been left out of the band’s decision to split.
Cheryl then hit back in an interview shortly after: “She’s full of s**t! She was the one who wanted to make a solo record.
"Which is why we took the hiatus. So she’s not now going to say that we broke up the band.”
What has Nadine said about the feud in the past?
Nadine has previously admitted to tensions in the band to The Sun, saying :“It was fine at the start but there’s always politics in any band. It just happened that I always got more vocals than everybody else, so in terms of people wanting their voice heard, that wasn’t happening.
“It made people, very bitter. They didn’t like that. It’s so sad for me to have to admit this stuff now because for so long, there’s the band, and you want everybody to think we’re best friends and we have pillow fights and, you know, drink milkshakes.
“I really, really wanted that to be, but it just wasn’t how it was. So yeah there was a divide. We’re very, very different characters.”
The Northern Irish star told how she and Cheryl clashed when Nadine said she was not consulted on the band’s decision to finally break up in 2013.
And in 2018 Nadine denied ever even being friends with Cheryl in the first place, telling Keith Lemon on Celebrity Juice:
"There was no falling out, there was just no friendship to begin with.”
Nadine said before she went into the jungle that she hadn't seen any of her Girls Aloud bandmates in six years.
She told the Mirror: "I spoke to Sarah around the time of Big Brother but I haven’t seen or spoken to them since the end of Girls Aloud or just before I had my daughter.
"So that’s about six years ago. Sarah more recently at the start of Big Brother when she was very excited, but yeah I haven’t spoken to or seen any of them in about that long."
Are the pair friends again?
Since being in the jungle, Nadine has denied a rift to her fellow campmates.
The 34-year-old former Girls Aloud star was quizzed by Jacqueline Jossa, when the former EastEnders actress told her: "I’d heard you didn’t get on with Cheryl."
Nadine replied simply: "Fake news."
Asked what it was like to be in a girl band she insisted: "Really good. I like being in a girl band. I am one of three sisters and went to an all-girls grammar school so I’m used to being around girls."
And in 2017, after the birth of Cheryl's son Bear, Nadine was one of the first to congratulate the new mum, writing:
"Congratulations @cherylofficial I am so so happy for you & your precious little boy & family!
"Sending you loads of love!…"
Referencing their past feud, Nadine told OK! magazine in 2017: “I haven’t seen her in a long time, I really, really haven’t. But I’m very, very happy for her and very, very excited for her.”
However during Nadine's stint in the jungle it has been reported that her former bandmates haven't been so supportive of her.
A music source exclusively revealed to The Sun: "The girls have been watching the series and keeping up with what’s been happening.
“They’ve wanted to see what Nadine has been doing and saying about them.
“They have a group chat and thought it would be funny to vote for Nadine to do the Bushtucker Trials. It’s all a bit of a laugh.”
ITV viewers also noted that none of her ex-bandmates supported her on social media.
Will Girls Aloud reunite?
In March 2018, Nadine opened up exclusively to The Sun about the likelihood of a Girls Aloud reunion.
She said she "wouldn't rule out" the possibility, potentially in 2022 to mark the 20th anniversary of the band’s formation on Popstars: The Rivals.
Though Nadine wondered – "Would the others need more persuading?
“Well, I wouldn’t try and persuade them. If they want to do it then let’s do it, but if they don’t, we’ll not. It’s OK. I’m fine either way.”
